He's probably a bit unenergetic because he's just been nuetered.
Try to avoid using food as treats or he'll always expect it when he does things right. I think pats and a kind voice are the best reward.
Good luck, PETLOVER.

I have a little poodle/bichon cross too. Ours is five and quite energetic. He always wants to play ball when people are around. I'm guessing that his lethargy is just because he was so recently neutered. All the pets we've had have not been quite themselves after that for a few days. I suggest you take a puppy training class (they'll have them at your local pet place) and to rent some training movies from the library. Whatever you are training your puppy to do, be consistent in it. Give him treats when he does something right. Try to teach him the basic things (like going outside to pee, not jumping up, and not barking in the house) right away before you start teaching him any tricks. Don't spend longer than about 10 min. working with your puppy on a certain thing, but go over it a few times a day until he gets it. Have fun!

Some people think intermittantly rewarding with treats, then pats and love, and a variation of randomly mixing the two is the best way to train an animal. There's a lot more to this theory, though... Using a clicker in addition to these types of positive reinforcements is amazingly effective because you can do it the moment the animal does your desired action... (I believe perhaps Pavlov suggested this...) =)
Definately enroll in a begininers obedience/socializing class--your local Humane Society or Vet or Pet Food store can assist you in determing the best to fit your needs. Good luck, this can be one of the most rewarding experiences you'll embark on! Make the most of it.

Give it sometime. First of all the new pet and you have to get used to each other. Then you can start the training when he is old and suitable for that. His being not energetic may be due to many reasons, the first one we can guess is the surgery. Could take a few days for him to feel normal and cheerful. Give him attention and love and it helps a lot in building a harmonious owner-pet relationship.

get yourself a good book about dog training. I also got a dog training video from www.CeasarMananin.com
It really helped me. I learned that giving treats for good behavior. You also may try a dog training class at petsmart if there is one near you. Alot depends on you, and your time allowances. You need to have alot of patience. Is your dog potty trained? I used a crate and have found that it is the fastest way to potty train.
Good luck. geve me a e-mail if you need more help.

maybe he misses his mom. my poodle used to look gloomy around that age. but then again, maybe he's acting that way because he just got neutered..also maybe he's probably still adapting to his new environment.
i used to train my dog to rollover by letting him smell first the tiny bits of meat in my hand and kinda tease him about it. then i do a circular motion with my hand holding the meat. at first he'll be following with his head so i had to guide him by gently rolling his body while still doing the circular motion with my hand.
u have to do this almost everyday so he'll get it. i did the same thing when i trained him to dance on his hind legs.
hope that helped a little :)

I recommend the book "It's me or the dog" by Victoria Stilwell and based on her TV programme.
Training is completly based on praise and rewards (using the carrot rather than the stick).
