Well, it is a seizure medication which has other effective uses, such as treating migranes. Weight loss is a big side effect of this.

Topamax was originally a seizure medication. Later it was discovered that Topamax was excellent in migraine, bi-polar disorder and beneficial in weight loss.
The industry sometimes refers to Topamax as 'Dopamax' because it has a tendency to make you very dingy and forgetful when you first begin taking the drug. These symptoms tend to pass. Another issue is weight loss. Topamax is a well tolerated drug that works very well. My advice would be to begin at a low dose and very slowly increase the dosage to prevent these side effects that usually occur when following the titration instructions in the physician insert. Start low, go slow. Topamax is a relatively safe drug that has been neurological and psychological benefits. Some people complain of dehydration, constipation, diahrrea and intestinal discomfort. Be sure to stay hydrated.

Topamax is an anticonvulsant
What are Topamax's FDA Approved Uses:
Topamax is used by itself or with other meds to treat a variety of forms of epilepsy. These include:
Simple partial seizures - you're still awake (more or less), with symptoms such as one or two limbs spazzing out or wacky visual or other sensory distortions. Think Alice in Wonderland, as Lewis Carroll must have had some serious temporal lobe issues. The fist link will take you to a better explanation. For a really detailed explanation of what a simple partial seizure is, click here.
Complex partial seziures - the people around you think you're just acting out to get attention. In reality you have no control over what's happening. Again, click there for the basics, click here for what neurologists think about this type of seizure.
Generalized tonic-clonic - the classic definition of a seizure, when you're completely flopping all over the place like a fish out of water. For the neurologist's view, click here.
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. If your child has this, my heart goes out to you. If you don't know what it is, consider yourself fortunate. See also Keppra, which has tested well for Lennox-Gastaut.
Topamax is also approved to treat migraines. And please, people, a migraine isn't a really bad headache. If you aren't brought to the ground by the nausea, the sensitivity to light and sound, and the jackhammers that have taken up residence in your head for at least a couple of hours, you don't have a freaking migraine.

everyone answered with information they just read offline so I thought I would tell you about the some of the side effects I experience from taking this medication..//
some side-effects that I get from it are It makes your lips and arms tingly sometimes, memory problems, loss of appetite, it makes ALL carbonated drinks taste like *** lol and at first I had a little trouble with my sleeping but it went away after a few weeks, dizziness, and it made me feel kind of stupid because when I would talk I just couldn't find the right words.
I also had some mood changes but my psych doctor said it wasn't directly caused by the meds.

First of all ask your doctor. I have been taking Topamax for 3 years for migraines now and have also taken it with Zoloft. It works differently for every person, so only your doctor would know if you could take zoloft along with your topamax, along with any other medications you may be taking including vitamins. Your best answer would be to not ask us on yahoo as we are not professionals, but to go and talk to your doctor and he can tell you if it is safe or not for you to mix the two drugs. Combinations of drugs affect people differently. So please just go talk to your doctor, one simple visit and he can either tell you yes or no! You'll be glad you went for professional help!

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience blurred vision, changes in vision, or pain in or around the eyes during treatment with topiramate. These may be early signs of a serious side effect.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking topiramate and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
worsening of seizures;
metabolic acidosis (a high acidity of the blood that may be detected by blood tests). Symptoms of metabolic acidosis include increased rate of breathing, decreased appetite, and irregular heartbeats;
decreased sweating;
fever or increased body temperature; or
side or low back pain, or painful or difficult urination (may indicate kidney stones).
