Yes it can go bad. It can depend on how it is stored and at what temperature.
It is a fairly sterile product but will still undergo some chemical reactions (mainly oxidation) which will cause the fat molecules to break down and cause acid to be produced, causing rancidity.
Rancidity can be caused by microorganisms acting on the fat in the same way.
In both cases a warmer (but not too hot) temperature will increase the rate at which this happens. I would say a few weeks in some cases but an unopened pack of margarine may take months or even years to go bad.

I've heard so many weird things about margarine- I don't know whether to put it on my toast, wax the car with, or embalm my mother-in-law in. Why the stuff doesn't kill us ALL- I haven't a clue. -And why they can't invent OTHER foods with margarines preservative qualities- I can't understand either!!! So DOES margarine ever go bad???- Beats me. Maybe no ones yet lived long enough to find out!

No- margiarine is less than one percent away from being plastic. So you could throw it out and you wouldn't get flies, or anything. Nah, it won't ever go bad.

I keep the surplus in the freezer and take it out as needed. I have never heard of it ever going bad.

I left some on the counter the other night. Within two hours it had robbed the ketchup, assaulted the pepper, and threatened the entire spice rack. Beware....... it goes bad quickly.
