Jehovah’s statement in Eden that he would put enmity between the seed of his Adversary and the seed of “the woman” did not change Him from being the ‘God of peace.’ (Ge 3:15; Ro 16:20; 1Co 14:33) The situation then was the same as in the days of the earthly life of his Son, Jesus Christ, who, after referring to his union with his heavenly Father, said: “Do not think I came to put peace upon the earth; I came to put, not peace, but a sword.” (Mt 10:32-40) Jesus’ ministry brought divisions, even within families (Lu 12:51-53), but it was because of his adherence to, and proclamation of, God’s righteous standards and truth. Division resulted because many individuals hardened their hearts against these truths while others accepted them. (Joh 8:40, 44-47; 15:22-25; 17:14) This was unavoidable if the divine principles were to be upheld; but the blame lay with the rejecters of what was right.

The answer lies in the verses that follow:

"For I came to turn 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A person's enemies will be members of his own family.' The one who loves his father or mother more than me isn't worthy of me, and the one who loves a son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me. The one who doesn't take up his cross and follow me isn't worthy of me." (Matthew 10:35-38)

Because of the nature of the Gospel message, which is essentially this: You are a dirty, rotten, filthy sinner who deserves death, and you can't save yourself. So, come to Jesus for forgiveness. It is only through Him that you can be saved.

People hate that message. All you need do is look around at those who mock and taunt Christians and the Gospel message here at Yahoo Answers.

Often, one person in a family may come to Christ, and the rest of the family will be in shock, and ask the new Christian, "What in the world were you thinking?" Some actually get punished.

A sword divides. Jesus divides. Hence the metaphor.

But there is a promise to those who persevere in the midst of such trials:

"The one who finds his life will lose it, and the one who loses his life because of me will find it." (Matthew 10:39)

Da Chet is right.......although id question a person with keen insite to have that name, as a "christian" pride is the worst thing to have-just ask satan AFTER he is cast in hell.

ok,ok......so...
The sword being the Word of God in fact has the power to (heb 4:12) change a persons life 4ever.
In Revelation Jesus declares that with the sword of his mouth he will judge all that reighn on earth upon his 2nd coming.
As in Genesis he spoke the world into existance. So it will be when he SAYS : well done thou good and faithful servant, or DEPART into everlasting torment ye that do iniquity.

The point is: God is both author and finisher of our faith.
He will SPEAK/DECLARE by his sword/word that which we did, the deeds in the flesh.

I suggest you read REVELATION 21:8 tonight.
his "sword/word" is plainly described for ALL here. -LIVE4TRUTH =]

Jesus came to boldly speak the truth, and not be intimidated or stopped from speaking the truth, and not conform to the ways of the world and not get sucked into the office politics of the religious-organization's leaders of that time, even if some people didn't like it.

It means that Christians will be mocked for what they believe. Where there is one person that believes and another that doesn't, there will be fighting, not peace. Even within families. People will hate you if you follow Him. The Word is sharper than any two-edged sword and people will hate it.

He didn't mean it literally, He meant that He came to show people the truth whether they are willing to accept it or not. He was letting people know that if you follow Him that your family might reject you and make you choose between Jesus or your family.

In the end, Jesus will separate the sheep from the goats. This is what He means by this.

He knew that what he taught, the truth and purity of his message, would cause great upheaval, politically, and religiously; his teaching is perfect Love and peace, but brought into a world based on teachings of fear and divine rage, what else would happen but that turmoil result?
