Ok, i'm sure you all have heard about cutting and such. I was just thinking, is it possible that a person would cut themself so that they can show their pain? Sort of like saying to themselves that thier pain is real, and isn't fake? Like, because if they cut themselves that has to prove their in pain, despite what others say. Is it possible people cut for this reason? J/w

i'm afraid i may have been very confusing in this. I meant like, for ex lets take a kid named jen. Jen feels depressed, but everyone thinks she is faking and is being dramatic, but she really is in pain. So, she cuts herself, to prove to herself that she isn't just being overdramatic, but that she is in real pain. Does that make more sense? I should probably clarify in that i am trying to figure out if that is what's going on w/ me. sorry for confusing anyone

many people cut to "feel" and many people cut to get attention. either way, the person is feeling (most likely) hurt and depressed. i been cutting since i was 11 and still struggle not to go through it. sometimes i can go months without doing anything then boom, i have a breakdown. but it depends on what others have to say about this topic. *sighs*

Sarah,
1st of all, it's not a wierd question - it's a very frightening but real question. I am a manic-depressive - have been for almost 12 years (diagnosed) and 34 years total (from birth). I have also been a cutter - for 2 years in high school when my life went out of control. My experience has shown me that cutters don't do it for the "glory" or recognition, they do it for the control (the control over their own lives and what happens to them daily) It's a source for coping with dificult problems - usually that are beyond the cutter's ability to solve alone. Get help....Talk to your counselor, call a phone help line (some are anonymous), speak to your Dr., trust and confide in a parent or family member if possible, speak to a friend who is supportive and listens even if they don't know what to do for you, go online and get a pen pal with similar issues for support, go to your County Health Unit (free clinic), become informed by reading books etc, asking questions, and looking inside yourself. If you think you are depressed and in pain, who cares if anyone else agrees - you know that you are! People that have never experienced these issues will probably not understand and more likely will deny you and your pain because of their own fears or misguided nievety about the world. Yes, people cut for this reason and many more - your feelings are valid, and most of all, they are yours! No one has the right to tell you they aren't real or worthy of help. (If you saw someone on the side of the road bleeding to death, you wouldn't walk away because their's still blood left in their body, you give them help!) Cutting yourself to prove to others that you are in pain is not going to change their minds - they chalk it up to being a "bigger drama queen" etc. Those that show real concern are the only ones you need to express yourself to - someone that listens and cares can be the best coping mechanism. I hope that I've helped you, and remember - you're not alone. Have faith. Ce

Uh...you may just be over thinking this a bit. One does not need to cut oneself to figure out if one is in pain. Just smack a 2x4 up the side of your head if you want to see if you feel pain. No scar and lots of pain.
No, I don't think they cut to feel pain. Clearly they have a whole bunch of mental issues and problems. Too many to list here. I am afraid you are off the mark on this one.

It's what emotional/goth/suicidal people do.They cut themselves when they feel noone is listening to them or conerned about them.Cutting yourself help's relieve your stress and problem's that is what ive seen on dr.phil and is why we as people need to help those in that kind of situation.I do it when i think about suicide.Or when i am getting no attention.Or threatened/putdown by someone who doesnt stop until you cry and think's theyre alway's right. It's a emotional feeling and need's to be dealt with.

uh yeah im sure that could be a reason but what is the solution? becuse people are just gonna think that the person is really screwd up then.so hopefully that isnt the attention theyre seeking.do they want to be thought of as "crazy"? the only person to convince how someone feels is a doctor.
