Those are all typical characteristics of the alcoholic personality. All you can do as a friend is be there for them. You can't lecture them or try to control their behavior, or they will become worse.

May also sound like depression. The alcohol and smoking are just added things to make it worse. When you dont care about yourself, you really dont care about yourself at all.
Ask him/her if they want to talk about anything and you are there for them if they do. If they dont, get a few other of their friends to tell them the same thing. If he/she realises that there ARE people who care about what is happening in their lives, they may start to open up to you and then you and the others can actually help.
As far as your friend not listening, he probably wont listen to criticism. Present yourself as a friend and let him do the talking and YOU do the lstening.
Then have him seek proffesional help, for the alcohol, depression or maybe sleep disorder.

Tell him or her of your concern and ask them to get help. If they choose not to and you don't feel comfortable with it, you need to walk away from the relationship until they choose to get help. You can't change anyone who doesn't want to change.
That's all you can do. Sit by and watch it happen or walk away.

find a new friend. this next statement is one of the truest things you will ever learn in life: you can't change anybody but yourself. so change yourself and find supportive friends that help you live the lifestyle you want to live.
