I happen to think the story and logic concerning the doctrine of sin is ridiculous and lacking in common sense. HOW, pray tell, does someone "sacrificing himself for the sins of others" compute? I don't think it makes any logical sense. You are responsible for the things that you do, not someone else. It makes no sense that Jesus dying would cosmically "forgive" your sins through some kind of legislation by God. Preposterous! God could wave his magic wand and forgive our sins. Why go through the ridiculous motions of "giving his son" to undo some cosmic law that he had the power to undo in some other way? There would seem so many other ways to "forgive our sins" than the ridiculous scheme that was proposed. Has no one the presence of mind to question the logic of "salvation"?

Rather than telling me to read this book or that chapter of the bible; give me actual quotes. I'm not going to sift through something like Aquinas Summa Theologica, which is thousands of pages long.

On a large scale, sin is a word religions (governments) interpret to justify murdering people and stealing their property.

On a smaller scale, it is used to justify bigotry, hatred and viiolence against people who refuse to agree with you.

This is the principle of the Ransom Sacrifice, something key to Christianity.

God set things up in Eden, and told Adam not to eat from the tree, or he would die. He ate, and thus he became imperfect, and eventually died. This imperfection spread to his offspring, and therefore into all humanity. This is the original sin. Humans were doomed to die.

God had set things up, and this was how it had to go. To simply change the rules would go against the laws he'd already set. God commanded that sacrifices would be made, and these were a way for some repaying to be made, but simple animals were not at all worth a perfect human life. However, the provision was made for something to be done.

A perfect human life would be the only way to repay for what had been done. Thus Jesus came to Earth, and lived his life as a perfect man. This also showed that it was possible for a perfect man to go through life and remain perfect. Jesus died, and that was the sacrifice that was made. However, death couldn't just be undone right ther. People were still imperfect and making imperfect babies. However, as Romans 6:23 says, "The wages sin pays is death," meaning that the effects of sin would no longer apply after death. Therefore, everlasting life as a perfect individual could be achieved after death, thanks to the Ransom Sacrifice paid by Jesus.

So no, there could be no other way to pay back than an equal exchange. Why Jesus, and not some other angel. Well, we know he had much affection for mankind, so perhaps he volunteered. We don't know what much, but we do know the result. As for exactly what happens after we die, that's another long story for another time.

You are an atheist, Your views are normal. Happy? You would need to repent and ask Jesus to come into your heart to understand the mysteries of God, other than that God will let you live in your own delusion. Re think, all your life.He stands at the door and knocks, I bet your life is so messed up, you would have nothing to loose if you believe. God Bless you and have mercy on your soul. You are curious and critical that is a good sign before conversion, did you hear what happened to Saul? It is in the Bible in the book of Acts, read it.

sweetie the only way that you will understand this is if you truly seek God and his understanding because the earthly can not understand things of the kingdom...Only the Spirit can give you understanding..but here are some facts to help you...fact God made a covenant with the Jews and a passover sacrifice was always required for atoning for sins...God sent his son to be the final sacrifice ( one sacrifice, for all people) God (through the prophet Isaiah foretold the Crucifixion of the Christ) also known as the Suffering servant...and the wages of sin is death...God place curses on man for sinning...The Jews believed that anyone who was hung on a tree was cursed....Jesus became a curse on the tree and took our sins ..I got to ask you something If you loved someone ( daughter ,son mother , father) would you not lay down your life to save theirs? See God does love us greatly and he loved us as to not hold back the life of his son to save Many... If you could save your family from a burning building but knew that by you saving those 12 or more people that you might not make it out alive would you value them more than yourself and try to rescue them? The amazing thing is that Jesus valued MY life enough to die in my place so that I might have eternal life. He is so amazing

You are right in saying that we are responsible for the things we do. God is holy, righteous and perfect, and we're not any of these things. We could never be pleasing to God by trying to be "good." We could never measure up to his standards.
God finds sin so egregious and repugnant that the only way there can be forgiveness of sin is though the shedding of blood. This may sound grotesque to you, but once you understand the holiness, righteousness and perfection of God, it makes sense.
God, because he is perfect, requires a perfect sacrifice, and the only perfect man to ever live is Jesus Christ.

I will say first that as a Christian Scientist, I don't share some mainstream beliefs about heaven and hell since I believe that both are states of mind. Sin brings punishment here or hereafter because it ruins our lives or the lives of others.

For example, an obvious one, addiction to gambling can ruin families and if it is really severe end a person up begging on the streets. Now some people's sins are not punished until after death, but I don't believe that they will boil below but that in their next stage of existence, they will still have to pay for the evil that they have done.

So, denying sin is not a good idea since if you hurt other people, for example, you will get hurt in some way yourself sooner or later. (Obviously sooner if people get so mad that they retaliate and hurt you physically.)

Some people think that certain negative attitudes such as being self-righteous are OK since, they say, we have a right to live how we wish but who wants to be around self-righteous or deceitful or conceited people? I don't.

Actually, many have the presence of mind to question the logic of salvation. It has been written about by many intellectual giants. I recommend you read Thomas Aquinas 'Summa Theologica' to gain the insight into what many many many people call one of the greatest minds to inquire into the nature of sin and salvation. I'm not trying to persuade you to believe in salvation, but attempting to demonstrate that the logic of sin and salvation is not something ignored by Christians!

The message about the cross doesn't make any sense to lost people. But for those of us who are being saved, it is God's power at work. As God says in the Scriptures, "I will destroy the wisdom of all who claim to be wise. I will confuse those who think they know so much." What happened to those wise people? What happened to those experts in the Scriptures? What happened to the ones who think they have all the answers? Didn't God show that the wisdom of this world is foolish? God was wise and decided not to let the people of this world use their wisdom to learn about him. Instead, God chose to save only those who believe the foolish message we preach.

Well, me at least...

What if the "died for your sins" thing might possibly have been directed to those in that time that might have done wrong and would not be honorable and take their own blame for it...and instead watched someone else take the blame. Would make a lot more sense...but then I'm not one of the people who want to believe people long ago lived in a magical world...

The salvation is the saving of your money from your greedy little fingers. The christian concept of sin is that you were born sinful. Since you were born sinful, you had to die. God then comes around and in the kindness of his heart, pays the penalty of death for you. So since he showed you all this love, give his church cash.
