I have really bad myopia (nearsightedness) and I'm starting college in 2 days. My sight fluctuates a lot, depending on time of day and level of relaxation, but at its worst, it's around 20/400! I have spent the whole summer trying natural methods to try to improve my eyesight and have only experienced flashes of both improved vision and perfect vision, none of which were permanent. You're probably gonna tell me to wear glasses like everyone else but I'm not going with that, considering all the proof there is that distance glasses can encourage myopia to progress, and that I have, long ago, decided to give up wearing them because they're nothing but an unnatural crutch.

I DON'T want anyone here trying to convince me that vision training doesn't work. I want to hear from people who are familiar with the Bates method and/or eye exercises and are willing to help me...because so far I've been trying to improve my vision BY MYSELF...but it's a lot harder than I thought!

Do you have advice?

I'm pretty sure I have the vision problem because in 3rd grade I fell and hit the back of my head hard on the ice and blacked out. After that I remembered that after that I noticed my vision getting bad.

And I'm just really disappointed...vision is so precious to me! I have done hours and hours of research all over the summer (and that in itself probably won't help my nearsightedness lol...I did remember to look away every so often tho) about improving vision, so I've tried a lot of things.

And btw, in college, when I need to see something I'll use pinhole glasses and/or reduced prescription lenses when I need them. They both give me 20/40 vision.

Does anyone have any advice for me other than "give up and wear glasses?"

Are you kidding me? Pinhole glasses are better than regular eyeglasses? Get a grip.

I've been in the eyecare field for over 15 years. Never have I heard of someone 20/400 correcting to anything better without surgery or a medical device like glasses or contacts. So save your money from all the scams out there.

Glasses do not "make your eyes worse". What happens is that the eyes strain and try to focus while wearing the correct prescription aleviates all that strain and lets the eyes relax and let the prescription do the work. You could wear glasses for years, then stop, and your eyes would readjust to the strain. Also if you are only in your late teens or early 20's your eyes will keep getting more myopic until you stablize about the age of 25. Also if you read and use a computer a lot for near vision, you make myopia worse.

There are several types of surgery available now besides LASIK and an ophthalmologist will be able to help you select a solution best suited to you.

And let me say that if you are 20/400 a: you will not be in college very long because you cannot see anything past 10 feet if that; b: don't drive!! AT ALL!! ; and c: GROW UP and just wear the dang glasses.

The thing is, natural methods for something like this I could imagine would be pretty costly too. There's hardly anything out there for curing just the eye, no. Normally its natural remedies for detoxification or replenishing of the body as a whole. Another reason why I say that it will still be costly is because since it will be rare..... well you can put two and two together.

Also, it most likely wouldl take a while to work. If something like that were in a patent it would put eye vision practitioners out of business. You also would have to do your research very thoroughly before you buy the product because there are always cons out there. For that trouble you might as well get some medical insurance for Lasik surgery and call it a day! The other choice is contact lenses and I'm sure they have a cool spectrum of color and variety options that you can choose from. I'm 22 years old and I wear my glasses all the time. I was the type like you, I couldn't stand the thought of me having to wear glasses all the time. I have grown comfortable with them because when I picked out my frames, I bought the one that suited my style the most.

I've always been told "carrots are good for your eyes." They contain alot of Vitamin A, which actually is good for bettering your concentration. But you would have to consume large amounts of it over periods of years for it to maybe actually have an impact on your vision and I understand that you are going to college very soon and you don't have the time for that. Best bet, contact lenses.

I had LASIK done 3 weeks ago so I can't talk about long term effects, but short term I can definately tell you I love it. My prescription was stable for two years and my cornea was more than the right thickness to have it done. I would surely go see a doctor and you may want to see more than one. I felt very comfortable with the one I had because I knew 2 or 3 people that had it done by him and loved it. The best thing to do would be to ask the doctor for references or ask around and see if someone may have had it done by that doctor. Consultations are usually free, so why not take a shot at finding out if you are candidate for LASIK or not. It was the best money I ever spent to have 20/10 vision. There of course are risks with LASIK because it is surgery, but just getting out of bed in the morning there are many risks that we encounter with far worse consiquences than having LASIK. The best part is being able to get out of bed and not trip over anything because you can't see it because you haven't put your glasses on or contacts in. Hope this helps!!

You need corrective lens (glasses or contact lens). And If you don't want to, have laser surgery. So far, there is no proven method yet to treat nearsightedness (myopia) but there are studies to control its progression. Research on Bates method, orthoK, and undercorrection proves that they don't work at all. Pin hole glasses is the principle behind the common glases, however this will lessen your field of vision (and you look wierd wearing it). So far use of Atropine eyedrops is the only one proven to work. Ask your doctor about this. Also there is this new technology called NEUROVISION (research the internet) which trains the brain (instead of the eyes) to see better but this is only available in some selected countries.
BTW, you mention that your vision is fluctuating, this is a common complaint of diabetics. Have your blood sugar check.

Fercryinoutloud, just give up the ghost and wear glasses. They're not that bad. It's much better to see than to not see.
