I wonder if people realize the difference between a true Christian, and someone who is caught up in being legalistic with a book that was written and compiled by men, and NEVER commissioned by God or Christ in the first place. Why are people so weak minded that they feel they have to have law in writing, instead of actually seeing what is right and good for ourselves in each situation. For example, "thou shalt not lie" - Now if you lived during the time of the Nazi occupation of Poland and you had Jews hidden in your building, would you volunteer that to Nazis so they could take them away? Would a loving God not require you to lie in order to save the innocent lives of the family against the murderers or would you hand them over in order to comply with a written code that can't be proven to be perfect, or entirely inspired by God? Think about it.

Excuse me, Creeklops, but I'll believe that when you offer proof. Since you can't that must be your OPINION, and therefore it is NOT a fact. You have NO evidence of this. If you'd like to continue the discussion feel free to email me for elightenment on the issue.

Velvet, I'm talking strictly about Bible thumping. I find your assumptions that I have not studied to be quite amusing. I've been studying religion for over ten years, in depth, every day. You missed my point totally. I was trying to bring some awareness to Bible thumpers, and the concept you speak of does not appear in the Bible, and the Bible does state that the ten commandments are to be obeyed quite literally.

Silent, what proof do you have of this? What proof do you have that the Bible is in fact God's law, verbatim? Or is this your assumption as a thumper?

Clay Pigeon: So are the Muslins right for killing infidels because their scripture says so in black and white? I'm guessing you're going to say no. So the next thing is that Mohammed told them he was inspired by God too. That's the problem with "Thumpers" you guys have nothing to fall back on except to state that so and so said it was inspired, but you still have no proof.

Do you speak about close examination of the entire scriptures or just the law? The Jews in Jesus day had begun refining the law too much, and began introducing things that had nothing to do with what God had told them. They accused Jesus's disciples, who were plucking the heads off grain plants and eating them as harvesting on the Sabbath, a serious crime. The Jews had strayed far, and when God's favor shifted to the Christians, they were not given a law, but rather principles. A loving Christian would not give up Jews in their household, even if they had every faith in the words of the Bible. The law no longer applies.

Those who put great faith in the Bible do so, not because they need things in writing, but because God put it in writing, and gave it to us. Would you be a better pilot by forgoing instruction and flying by what your heart tells you? The accuracy of the Bible points to divine inspiration, so we Christians will go on using our Bibles.

First, it is not "thou shalt not lie" it's "thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor" as it was given (Exodus 20:16). Telling a lie to save someones life IS NOT BEARING FALSE WITNESS AGAINST THY NEIGHBOR!

Second, many of the prophets, including John the Beloved, state in the writings of their prophesies that GOD TOLD THEM TO WRITE IT DOWN!

Third, Jesus not only endorsed and used in His teachings the writings of Moses, David, Solomon, and the Old Testament Prophets, but He said that they would be here and in effect until all was accomplished.

Fourth, the historical intactness of the Bible is beyond dispute, wherein the discovery of texts 500 years older than the preceding earlier texts were identical. Homer's Iliad, another ancient writing, had a time span of about 50 years between it's two oldest known writings, and there were over 2700 differences between the two texts. This shows that the Bible clearly has a covering of Divine intervention, or in other words, is endorsed by GOD!

Fifth, and finally, the opening to John's Gospel clearly puts this through: the Bible is the written representation of Messiah! Jesus even agreed with this concept when He made reference of "in the volume of the Book written of Me."

There is a bottom line, however. The Bible is also called the Sword of the Spirit, and when foolish men try to wield it without guidance from the Holy Spirit, they will make mistakes and probably hurt someone. If someone has done this to you, I apologize, but to be a Christian one has to accept the inerrancy of scripture, and the omnipotent ability of God to get it to us intact!

I am wondering if you really know the differences between the two....because by what you wrote it doesn't seem so.....I'm a christian are you?......
because to me a Bible Thumper is just one who shares the Word of God ...maybe be a little over zealous at times but none the less is sharing the truth of Gods word...

You say "someone who is caught up in being legalistic with a book that was written and compiled by men, and NEVER commissioned by God or Christ in the first place. "
well to me a true Christian believes the Bible or the Word of God is the true all inspired Word of God.....

and you say"people so weak minded that they feel they have to have law in writing, instead of actually seeing what is right and good for ourselves in each situation. " .....what you just said seems to me that you are saying that you are knowing more than God....that you don't need His Word to guide you because you can figure it out for yourself......I for one need the guidance of my God and Savior in all things...that doesn't make me weak minded ...but what you say sounds prideful to me....

and as for the lying...well Exodus above me has answered that well...

I think "Idolaters" and "Modern Pharisees" are better names then "Bible Thumpers," because that is exactly what they are. Ironically no where in scripture dose Jesus command anyone to write anything with the exception of the book of Revelations, and this was only by the word of John.

Jesus left "the Comforter" who is the Holy Spirit and scripture clearly teaches not to rely on scripture but on the Holy Spirit. As the 2nd chapter of Corinthians says "the letter of the law brings death but the spirit of the law brings life" (2Cor 3:6) so Paul was teaching to live by the spirit, by faith.

This is what I would suggest and I am not trying to be attacking here. I think you have some good thoughts, however, it is true that everyone should build off of the thoughts of those that came before us. This means taking the time to read- philosophy, theology, whatever. Just take the time to gain an understanding of a perspective that is not yours.

The Principle of Double Effect has been around for a long long time in Christianity. It is in simple terms the idea that it is permissable to choose the lesser of two evils when faced with such a limited choice.

In this light, your conclusion that God's word contained within the Bible is imperfect falls apart severely. All because you have not taken the time to assess the copious amount of material, which addresses your question.

Again, I am not attacking, but am trying to help you to realize that truly thoughtful questions do not just arise out of our own thoughts alone, but out of our thoughts weighed against the opinions of the giants upon which we stand who came before us.

Good luck in your journey of questions. I believe you will have much to gain from reading, reading, and more reading.

Read Daniel 3. All they had to do was look like they were tying their shoes and it would have prevented them from entering the fiery furnace.

These three men risked their lives for the obedience of GOD's law. Did GOD not honor their obedience?

Nothing legalistic about obeying GOD! GOD has a very good reason for giving HIS laws to us. It is for our own good. Your example has a major flaw, if you are Christian, and that is that you show no faith in GOD.

Here I do type replies to Liberals, only to teach, but in person that I knew was a Liberal, I would have nothing to say!

I mostly agree with you. Many "Christians" use their faith and "displayed piety" to garner social status and respect from other humans who are probably doing the same thing, not as a way of life that is right vs. wrong, salvation, etc. These people wear their Christianity like a Prada bag and Ferragamo heels. That is why they are hypocrites who cast all other Christians in a bad light. Perhaps St. Peter will give them a "goody bag" full of swag as they walk the red carpet to the pearly gates.

Excuse me, but, the Bible was completely INSPIRED BY GOD. The Holy Spirit breathed inspiration into all the men who wrote it on Gods command.
