An officer can search your person or your property as long as they have probable cause or permission to do so. Or, of course, a warrant. Personal property is routinely searched if you are being detained or arrested to make sure that you do not have a weapon. The officer does need to have a reason to think that you might have a weapon. A cursory exterior search is usually what will be done (pat down). Anything illegal discovered during this search is admissible. Any compartment of the vehicle or any thing in the vehicle can be searched. No "plain sight" rules apply here. Officers frequently ask for permission to search even if they have probable cause, for several reasons. The answer to your question then is...Yes.

Unless your state has a statute restricting police search and seizure the police may search all containers located in the car at the time of a lawful search, they may also look in your trunk. However, the officer must first establish probable cause to do so. The police do not need your consent. When an officer requests consent it is because they do not have probable cause to search your car. In most cases a warrant is not required to search your car. Your home is another story.

I am not sure where you live, but during a legal search of a vehicle they can search,or request to have opened and "searched" by owner, any items in the vehicle.
When it comes to something like a woman's purse, a female officer may search it, but generally a male officer will ask the owner to open it, etc. Unless they know or see that there is something in there, then in they go for sure.

the cop has to find something on your person first before he can search your car, unless when he asks "Do you mind if i search your vehical tonight?" you say "sure go ahead" then in that case the cop can search you for the classic PC of " I smell marijuana, alcohol ect.." You are allowed to tell him "no he can't search your car and he'll just give you a hard time. Get a copy of the consitution learn it and memorize The Bill of Rights cops violate our rights so often it's pathetic. Don't get caught ignorant of your rights

A legal search means asshole to elbow baby! They can look in, open, tear out the car-seats if they want to! Bring in the K-9's and dump your shitzel on the curb! Your purse is the first thing to go!
They can systematically tear the car apart with "probable cause and suspect".

If they are conducting an investigation, they can search anything they want.
On the other hand, if they only have probable cause, they will ask you if it is ok if they search your car. If you consent and If your purse and bags are in the car then you just gave them permission to search them.

Generally -- Yes.
If they have a search warrant, it covers what it says it covers.
If it is a permission search (this is where you give permission), the search continues until you say stop.
If it is a search pursuant to an arrest, they can search everything in the immediate area of the arrested person.

I've never had anything searched. Except my purse. And I was conducting the search. Still haven't found what I was looking for.
