Sarah(princess in Hebrew) was barren un able to conceive. She gave her (Egyptian slave) to Abraham so he could have an heir. The first born usually inherits from the father all his wealth. When Sarah become pregnant with Isaac Sarah wanted to make sure her son inherited from Abraham. Ishmael actually not legitimate because there was no marriage between he and Hagar. The Hebrews were to marry in side the Tribe, clan nation etc. I don't know what to call Sarah's emotions, jealousy or self preservation. However God did promise Ishmael to become a great nation . You can read Genesis 20 and follow the story along.

thou shalt have no other gods before me, sarah said. altho, if you read the biblical archeological society of NY's info on the bible, so many of these stories are lifted from egyptian mythology and doctored up, so I'm not even sure anymore that there was a sarah/sarai.
