Any job worth doing, is worth doing well. Jesus never told the Roman centurion (the equivalent of a military policeman) not to be in the military. A good principle to follow is "Whether you eat or drink, whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."
(1 Corinthians 10:31)

The apostles followed various trades. It is not that preaching and evangelizing are better or holier jobs than any other, but God gives everybody different talents and abilities.God may give someone an assignment and equip them in special ways for that assignment; in such cases, it is always best to obey.

Provided that you are not using your engineering skills to do things that directly contribute to leading people into sin (designing violent video games is an example of a use of engineering skills that would go against MY conscience), go and do whatever God puts on your plate. Glorify Him by doing your best.

If you want to do things that will directly benefit those who are poor, suffering from disease, lack shelter, etc., those are good, too. If you want to volunteer some of your time, you may be able to do some things that will more directly benefit those who are in need, and so balance your other activities.

Earning a living, even earning a good living with a large salary is not sinful. It's the wrongs that men do in order to earn money dishonestly (steal, cheat) that are sin, or what they do with their money afterward (waste it, misuse it on drugs, spend it to show off, etc.) Hope this helps to clarify things!

A good question, that i guess it shouldn't appear in the engineering section here. Well, here could be some possible answers..

It is all depending on what is the religion you are in. Some having different point of view towards engineering perspective. Take Buddhism for example. We use candle when we needs them. However, who knows some engineer out there invent an LED Light with Candle Look type to replace them? And as well as the joystick. Though LED has a great achievement in human's light invention, but does it actually cater for the same effect if i were to use them in the buddhist temple?

If you are christian, last time we use to have candles to light up the whole church. Due to technology advancement, we begin to use light bulb. Then, we start to use dimmer to have some dimming results to have a better message delivery.

Well lets to muslim, last time we use to have a leader speaks to the microphone and broadcast it to the surrounding residential every 5 prayers time. And due to technology advancement, right now the sound recorded into the hi-fi system.. . perhaps MP3 system then set a timer and broadcast them easily.

your question is really broad indeed. And perhaps, some of the religion still not except those "technology " integrating to their "holy place" like Lama.

Engineer really help a lot, and indirectly they help us to :
1. Realize the technology and we are moving forward
2. Change the style we use to pray
3. Change the method we use to have
4. Realization of the exat timing corresponding to the GMT
5. Create "Lazy" but "comfortable" environment to everybody

and so on..

Well, in conclusion, there is no exact answer
