by their eyes if their eyes are clear then they are fresh and they should have no smell at all if their eyes are kinda cloudy and smell fishy then they are not fresh and if you poke them it shouldn't leave a finger indention and if it does then it isn't fresh

should not smell like fish, but rather should have a clean fresh smell
eyes should be bulging outward and not sunken in
Eyes should also be clear
gills should bright red not dull red or brick red
when the flesh is pressed in it should feel firm and rebound quickly , If the impression left by your finger stays refuse to purchase
a little slime is normal on a fish, sliminess is not

the membrane (top layer) of the fish, if the membrane is white it is older than if it is transperant....
