Bolshevik party in a lot of ways based their ideology on work of Marx.According to Marx, "religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people". Although there are different interpretations of what he meant, his statement most of the times was taken to mean that religion was a tool used by the bourgeoisie to keep the proletariat quiet. This statement of Marx and interpretation of his statement was often used by Bolsheviks in their fight against religion.

The Russian Orthodox Church was an ally of the aristocracy in exploiting the poor people and was immensely rich at a time when people were starving.
The revolutionaries were determined to strip the church of its power and wealth.

The tzar's had used the church to help suppress the people(Remember Divine right) so the Bolsheviks did not claim there was no god, just that religions were bad. probably the only truth they ever told.
