I've been there and I definitely say,"Go!!" It's all of the above and more! You can't guarantee that everything will be problem free and you won't see things that shock you, but it will be an incredible experience which will make you feel more alive than you'd feel going somewhere mainstream.
There wasn't a single dull day when I went there. I think it is one of the best places I've seen so far, and I'd go back again for sure!!!

I havent been there since the early 80's but from what I remember it was a place of contrasts. Yes there is a considerable amount of poverty and pollution in some areas, but conversely, these are places of great beauty. Beyond the Taj Mahal, there are ancient temples all over the country, many still in use. The carvings are intricate and beautiful, if somewhat scandalous by western standards. India has one of the oldest unbroken lines of culture in the world.
And you friends are correct it is NOTHING like Canada, but then we already have a place that like Canada, I think it's called..Oh yeah...Canada.
I would thoroughly enjoy being able to return at some point, I still have a couple of friends there. It's one of the places that I would consider acutaly living when i can finally get OUT of this dismal, place I'm stuck in (BTW I live in America, and I hate it.)

I have been to Goa it on the east coast of India. There is a strong Portuguese influence in Goa. I'm half Spanish half Irish. I'm not really base anywhere. Right now I'm write this from Paris. But next week I shall be in Madrid have my family there. The beach's in Goa are breath taking. The locals are so friendly. Goa was made famous by the hippies in the sixties, but it very up market place to stay. Been honest there is poverty there. But there poverty in ever country. I suggest you should vist it. It and unforgettable experience

I've been to Mumbai (aka Bombay) and it was hot, filthy, smelly and full of people who just want to rip you off. I didn't enjoy it.
I've also been to Bangalore and that's a lot nicer. Cleaner (by Indian standards) and safer. However, it's not a great tourist destination - I was there on business.

I spent five weeks in Khalikat (Calcutta) - the dirtiest, grubbiest, smoggiest, most polluted and traffic congested city in the world ~ I loved it!
People living their lives on the sidewalks, moving closer to the crematorium when they are close to death to save on burial funds. Shocking, yes, but gives you a life-changing perspective and wakes one up from their everyday ho-hum of life here in Canada. Highly recommended, unless you have never travelled before. Then start with inner city America and work your way up.
