Depends on the reason. If the dog is adoptable and nothing wrong then YES it's very wrong to put them to sleep. If they are horribly sick, or in pain then it's the kindest thing even though I still feel horrible saying that.

Three years ago I took a much loved Rottweiler to the vet because he had started to limp on his right hind foot. the vet x-rayed the foot and found a tumour. It was uncertain whether or not it was malignant but the dog could not have been left in pain even whilst a biopsy was performed. The vet offered two courses of action : 1) to put the dog down immediately , and 2) to remove the leg - and although the tumour was near his paw the entire leg must go. After long discussion with the vet and although the cost of the operation was enormous, I elected to have the leg removed. The vet said that he was a young and otherwise healthy dog, healing rate would be fast, he would soon adjust to life on 3 legs - BUT once the biopsy on the removed leg showed that the cancer was very aggressive, the vet said he would have 3 more months but not 6.

Nevertheless, I didn't regret the decision I made, The vet was absolutely right - he had just over 5 months of happy, pain-free life and he could get up a fine speed on his three legs - it was worth it, because a dog's life is so short anyway.
Then, overnight he began to gasp for breath so I called the vet to the house and Max was put to sleep quickly and with dignity.

Never put a dog to sleep unnecessarily - but when it needs to be done, please do it immediately. Don't keep him alive for your sake.

It is not wrong to put a mean or very ill dog to sleep
Read the following true story. I saw the most beautiful German Shepherd last week. He had excellent stance, manners and was wonderful with my little grandchildren. He had been rescued from a vet's office where he had been placed by a vindictive wife who paid to put the dog to sleep. In this latter story, yes it is wrong to put a dog to sleep. The vet just waited for the person to move from the area and placed the dog for adoption.

I certainly think putting your dog to sleep is not wrong, other people think different which is ok, because people come from different backgrounds and experiences. There is no right or wrong answer, it's based on personal belief and whatever you think, no one should tell you whether your opinion is good or bad.

Back in Feb. I had to put down my 4 yr. old, high strung golden retriever. He was my companion, best friend, and my buddy. He was loved by everyone, especially by my father who was opposed of getting him in the first place. Ever since we brought him home from the breeder he was always hyper, we thought it was just a puppy stage, but it kept going throughout the 4 years we had him. I tried everything to train him of what a golden should be. I tried so hard not to give up on him, until he really got out of control. Christmas night he attacked me really bad for no reason, but that didn't stop me from wanting him. I loved this dog so much that I forgave him. Then two weeks later, he attacked my sister while walking him. This time it was for no reason as well. Putting him to sleep was my last option, I tried to find a shelter for him (Golden Retriever Rescue) so maybe they could help him, but most shelters wouldn't take dogs that bit people. My family and I talked to our vet about keeping him or putting him to sleep and she told us the best advice, "First, goldens should NEVER have that temper. Second, that trust will never come back to the person he loves the most (me). And with that trust gone, can you trust him not to hurt a child when you are walking him? Can you trust him to protect you and your family?" It crushed me when I heard this, but she right. As much as I loved him, I had to let him go. My dog was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One moment he was the most gentile and loving golden, another minute he was a beast. And he knew after the "beast" phase (that only lasted about maybe 30 sec. to a minute), he knew after it was wrong. He was suffering, and I couldn't let him go through it anymore. He was a sick dog and I gave him a good home and life and companionship. After I put my golden down, my friend gave me a book to read for my mourning. It's called "Marley & Me: life and love with the world's worst dog" by John Grogan. It's a wonderful book and he has a website as well (www.marleyandme.com) so you can see that other dog lovers share same experiences.

I don't know what your situation is, but if you do decide to put your dog down just know that your dog was very lucky to have you and that you provided him with a good home and most of all that you loved him.

My friend's elderly dog just died this morning. Ironically, they were going to go to the vet and have the dog put down today. They had debated it all summer, but as he didn't seem uncomfortable, they opted for life. It became apparent this week that he was not well or happy. I put my 23 yr. old cat down, as about all that was left of the cat was a strong heart. Even so, the vet tried to get me to do things to prolong life. That, to me, would've been cruel. Keeping an animal alive for youself's sake, is wrong. It's better to let that loving, faithful pet have what is best for it. However, I was told by a vet to put that same cat down when he had a bad reaction to a surgical procedure, when he was 10. As, he kept trying to jump up into my arms, I said, he's got fight, so what can we do to save him. Glad I asked, as it took a simple IV. Putting a pet down for reasons other than relief from constant pain/terminal illness/suffering is a very wrong reason.

That is a good question and one I had to deal with yesterday .

I had to put my 8 yr old lab/chow down yesterday and it was very difficult for me especially since he was so young and had many years left in him.

His hips was starting to go out on him and we was trying steriods and tramadol for pain to hope it might get better and he wouldnt be in so much pain. On Friday he went from 2pm the day before till 8 am Friday morning without going to the bathroom . I called the vet and got xrays done.
I had three options.
1. have spine surgery done which was very expensive and did not have the money for it.
2. let him come home and be on moraphine
3. lay him down
I put him to sleep . I wasnt going to let my dog lay at home with moraphine with no life just so I wouldnt have to lose my pet. That is just totally wrong .
If he was a young pup I might have considered the surgery and worked out something but not with his age.

If the dog is in pain and having problems let him go to sleep .

Euthenization is a very humane thing to do to an animal that is suffering. But if the animal is not sick, hurt, or whatever the case may be, then, my answer is "NO!"
Try putting an ad in the paper or at your local veteranarian's clinic to see if you can find a home for the animal.
If your dog is sick and suffering, by all means do have him euthenized. I don't know how old your dog is, but I had a 13 year old German Shepard--Princess--that I had to have euthenized and I held her head in my arms and kept whispering in her ear how much I loved her and what a good friend she has been to me--my heart. It really broke my heart and the guilt bothered me for a long time. You know, the 'What If's?'.Good luck hun'

It depends. Putting a dog asleep as a way of controlling population is wrong. But, putting a dog to sleep is the only humane way for a dog to die if he or she is gonna die anyway.

Someone may, but in my opinion they are in the minority.

If is wrong to euthanize a well animal for selfish reasons. [People have euthanized their physically fit and healthy animals because they could not bear the thought of someone else owning their pet.]

It is logical and compassionate to euthanize an animal which will not recover due to limited economic and medical resources.

Some pet owners may be able to afford several thousand dollars in treatment of their sick pet, but most cannot. Unless there is an altruistic benefactor who agrees to pay all of the expenses, for most families a sick or injured pet must be put down.

It is one of the hardest acts to take with a pet. With ours, who had been in the family almost ten years, we were all present [parents and teenage children] in the room when the doctor administered the injection. Amber, our cocker spaniel, went immediately to sleep.

if the vet suggest putting a dog to sleep it is probably better anyway. I don't know of a vet that would put a dog down for no reason.
