An abalone is a mollusk (snail family) that clings to rocks close to the shore. The shells are usually anywhere from 5 to 8 inches when harvested. A long flat iron similar to a spatula is used to remove the animal from the shell. They are very tasty when prepared properly. The out side of the shell is rough and usually gray to black in color. The inside of the shell is quite beautiful. It is smooth and shiny and very much like mother of perl (rainbow colored). It is often used as inlay on wood or bamboo items.
