The risk is small. It is a myth that using cell phones while pumping gas poses a risk; there is no documented report of there ever being a problem because of them. Leaving your engine running has been linked to automobile fires at the fuel pump, most from an engine compartment spark igniting gasoline fumes. The vast majority of gas pump fires, however, are caused by static electricity which is generally caused by people getting in and out of their cars while refueling.
Feel free to chat on the phone while pumping gas, but turning your engine off is a good idea.

Your risk of having a problem while pumping gas due to the engine running is very very small.
It is dangerous to leave a car running with out someone behind the controls. (not to mention, illegal in most places)

I don't think so. I have been doing this since I started driving 23 years ago, and I have yet to blow up my car, myself or the gas station. I think it's another old wives tale, much like the one that goes, if you masturbate too much you will go blind....

Probably not as dangerous as it used to be . . .
Cars used to backfire a lot . . .
and this is just one of the reasons . . .
why it is a bad idea . . .
to leave your car running while refueling.
But any activity that might create sparks is also a bad idea.
So my answer is a definite . . . YES

Why on earth would you want to leave your engine running while filling up with petrol? Is it so hard to turn the engine off for a few minutes?
