A rare ecoli strain has been found in several countries. This would be unusal to be found at the same time in several countries where they do not have the same suppler of the vegetable source. A friend of mine at Emory said that they did not want to overreact but it looked like a terrorist act. what do you think?
E.coli outbreak 'was rare strain'

The rare strain is more difficult to detect in tests
A rare strain of E.coli O157 was behind the outbreak of the bug linked to a nursery in Fife, according to experts.
Health Protection Scotland (HPS) said the strain had been seen in Europe and Australia but was rare in the UK.

A spokesman said the unusual bacterium was hard to identify and clinicians were being urged to be vigilant when testing samples.

The strain has been linked to 13 cases in Dunfermline, four other single cases in Scotland and four cases in England.

HPS said it was working with its sister agency in England to determine the possible origin of the bug, known as Sorbitol-fermenting Vero cytotoxin.

HPS consultant Dr John Cowden said clinicians had been urged to ensure the unusual strain was not missed when dealing with samples from patients who were suspected of having any kind of E.coli O157.

'Identical symptoms'

He said: "This unusual strain reacts differently in the laboratory from other types of E.coli O157 and this is why we are interested in finding out more about it.

I don't think that terrorists have been plotting to give a couple hundred people cases of week-long diarrhea.

They'd have to be REALLY stupid terrorists. I mean, come on! We're talking about spinach, here. How many people are actually panicking over not being able to eat spinach?! This is like having an ecoli outbreak in mustard greens. "What? I can't eat mustard greens? Oh dear! What has the world come to?" I don't think so.

However, when the chocolate supply turns up having ecoli, then I'll be certain of possible terrorist activity.

In the USA, this outbreak of E.coli in spinach supposed to be in Organic spinach from Natural Selection Foods (as well as in non-organic) and some other countries as noted above.

Before I would guess terrorism, I would definitely think about the huge agro bio tec companies trying to sabotage even further the rapidly growing organic movement.

I just heard about that in the news today. I guess it could happen but if I worry over it I won't eat anything at all. Spinch of all things I am rare in that I love spinich but most americans do not eat the healthy things and the terrorist would have been better off tainting fast food than veggies

If a terrorist truly wanted to affect many Americans, the food supply would definitely be a good choice. However, as un-health conscious as many Americans are, McDonalds may have been a better choice than spinach.

I think that terrorists have the capability to contaminate our food supplies. In the U.S. we have had one person die, and dozens sick from E. coli. Also, living in CA, we live near the border of Mexico and there are many illegal aliens who come over here. I believe terrorists go to Mexico, and sneak into the U.S. I bet their are more here than we realize, and are in for a terrible surprise. I don't mean to sound paranoid, but it is possible.
