Decide on who you want.
If your past is too painful, for whatever reason, move on to something new (and hopefully healthier). And make a real go of it. If you are as unsure as you sound, sit back and think about your choices. Weigh things up, and make a smart decision. One, or the other, or neither.

Flirt with them both and keep your options open. If you reject the one who does like you, and the one you like rejects you, then you're just going to be in a depressing situation. So it's not as much of a matter of preference as you may think. But if you do choose the ex make sure you resolve things and make them different from the first time. So you should keep the ex as a fall back girl, but don't you DARE tell her that, or that you're going after another girl until you are SURE that the other girl likes you.

Do you mean that after five years you are not mature enough to tell her the relationship is over? If the girl you are trying to get knows that your ex wants you back, probably all your other friends do as well, and stringing her along by not letting her know your interest is elsewhere is not only unkind but cruel. You're setting her up to be a laughingstock, and she deserves better than that.
