Alcohol turns off the receptors in the kidneys that tell them to filter out the uric acid and toxins and reabsorb the water. Therefore the kidneys flush out the water as well, dehydrating your body. The kidneys continue doing this for hours after you stop drinking, it's important to drink lots of fluids. You actually cannot rehydrate yourself until the kidneys return to normal function, however you could suffer organ injury if you dehydrate too much. Often after a night of sever drinking some people may suffer from symptoms of urinary tract infection, strictly because of dehydration.

Alcohol is not a diuretic, diuretics cause your cells to shed water, that's why they reduce puffiness. Alcohol acts directly on the kidneys.
