Those are good answers about Blu-ray dvd players, but if you're wondering about the disks themselves, I'll try my best. Have you heard of HD (high-definition) quality? If not, then you should know that HD is a kind of DVD that has very good quality and images, much better than regular DVD's.

Blu-Ray disks are another kind of high-definition DVD's. Right now, HD DVD's and Blu-Ray disks are in high competition of one another and companies are siding with either of the two to get their movies produced. There isn't necessarily a better one, per se, but the Blu-Ray dvd players are wayyyy more expensive.

Lastly, Blu-ray disks also cost more than regular DVD's. In Canada (where I live) it's about $30 on average, which would probably be in the high 20's in the US.

Yeah... I work in an electronics store so I should know this stuff

A Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a next-generation optical disc format designed for high-density storage of high-definition video and data.

The name Blu-ray is derived from the blue-violet laser it uses to read and write to the chalcogenide disc. A Blu-ray Disc can store substantially more data than a DVD, because of the shorter wavelength (405 nm) of the blue-violet laser (DVDs use a 650-nm-wavelength red laser and CDs use an infrared 780 nm laser), which allows more information to be stored digitally in the same amount of space. In comparison to HD DVD, which also uses a blue laser, Blu-ray has more information capacity per layer (currently 25GB, but test media is up to 100 gigabytes). Sony has released 50 gigabyte recordable BDs and will soon be releasing 50 gigabyte BD media discs. In August 2006, TDK developed a Blu-ray disk with a 200 gigabytes capacity.

It's a new media format from Sony. It's like a smaller dvd with excellent picture and can store a lot more. Oh, and it's INCREDIBLY expensive to buy a blu-ray player.
