You have to be really careful she doesn't get mastitis right now. If she starts running a fever or gets a hot spot on her breast drag her to the urgent care even if she doesn't want to go, it needs to be treated with antiboitics if she just had a baby this week. A cabbage leave is the right sz and will help with discomfort, you need to alternate between cold and warm packs. If she wants to continue to breastfeed, sounds like she did not get much help there, please call Le Lache League Leader and they will talk to her even on sunday to coach her through the day.

She really should let the baby suckle as much as possible. This helps the milk flow. The first few days to a week or more very little milk comes and its a different consistency. Persistance is the key to breastfeeding.
In the meantime, warm showers and warm wet compresses and massaging the breasts...daddy, you can help with that ;) when the baby is not feeding.
Dont give up!! Good luck.

If she is trying to dry up Ice. No hot showers and don't let the water hit you breast that will produce more milk. Massaging is ok but do not express the milk that also will produce more. The less stimulation the better. If she is wanting to keep at it tell her to nurse as often as the baby will. That will prevent clogged milk ducts and breast infections. I was always told if you are doing it right it won't hurt they lie lol. It hurts for about 2 weeks then it gets easier it is so worth it please keep trying.

If your breasts are painful and engorged, you may wish to soak them in warm water and vinegar and use a brown paper bag. This should help relieve them and get the milk flowing. It is an old remedy that I have heard from elders. I've never tried it myself as I did not require it but I guess if you are in pain, it is worth a shot

All I know about this is what my mother told me about trying to breast feed my older brother. It was agonizingly painful for her so the doctor made her stop. No harm done.
