Depending on the type of preventative. Frontline Plus will kill flea eggs and larvae. Revolution will prevent eggs from hatching and kills adult fleas. Advantage and advantix takes care of fleas and flea larvae. Sentinel is basically a birth control for fleas. So, if you see a flea, after it bites the pet, it will not be able to reproduce and give you an infestation. If your pets are on Sentinel, Novartis, who is the manufacturer, will back up their product and give you a free capstar, which kills fleas within 30 minutes for up to 24 hours.

Bombs don't work as well as sprays because the rain down and don't get under the furniture. Use something that says it kills the eggs, otherwise it will be useless as adult fleas don't live in the environment, they live on the pet. I don't like a lot of toxic sprays. If you use Advantage or Frontline monthly, it should take care of the problem easily. They are very safe because they don't get absorbed into the bloodstream like some other over the counter products that contain permethrins or pyrethrins. Like the above post said, 2 fleas can each lay 50 eggs a day and in 2 weeks they can all be adult fleas ready to reproduce!

It's quite possible you may want to treat your home. For each flea you see, it only represents 5% of the population. Your dog could have brought in flea eggs and larvae in along with those fleas, and dropped them off into your carpet. Eventually those will hatch, and start to produce more. Don't really recommend store bought products, they are sometimes inefective, could possibly only kill the adults and not the eggs, and possibly are harmful to pets. You may want to have a pest control service come out and spray not only your home, but also your yard.

Make sure your pet is on a topical such as frontline or advantix. Those work better than store bought brands, and dont cause toxicities like hartz or another product can.

I have four dogs and when I find even one flea, I vacuum my floors with moth balls in the vacuum cleaner. As the vacuum suck up the eggs, the moth balls kill the eggs. I don't empty the vacuum for at least two days to make sure they are all dead.
After vacuuming, just spray your favorite air freshener or light a couple of candles to get rid of the moth ball smell. I have never had a flea problem and I've have lived with dogs for the past 20 yrs.

Where you find 2, there could be hundreds of eggs. Your husband is right.
