My pug and shar-pei have problems with their nails, they don't want me to touch it for a while (to get the clipped) and after 4 to 6 days the nail falls off and the vein inside is exposed. but a new nail eventually grows back. i just wonder if this is bad and what the possible cause may be. thanks to any opinion i may get.

Uh, that's really weird, especially if it's happening to BOTH dogs. Take them to the vet. Sounds like some kind of trauma to the nails, maybe in infection, or poor diet. I have no clue. Dog nails are not supposed to just fall off.

I would get a second opinion... for sure. If you feel that something isn't sounding right, go with your instincts. I had a problem with my dog that had frequent diarrhea on and off for a few months.. 2 different vets said it was because of his food, I switched his food and it still happened. 4 months later I found out he had a parasite.. after going to the 3rd vet.. pretty sad.

Do you feed the dog a good brand of food. Generic food brands do not have the proper nutrition needed for proper health maintenence. Never buy your dog a generic food like ole roy, or special puppy. If this is not the case it could be a fungus.

They could have a nail bed infection or fungal infection. Certain immune diseases can also cause this. Best to let your vet take a look. It's not normal at all!

usually the nail gets caught in the carpet etc and is ripped off. very painful. It would be best if you could work with them to get them used to regular clipping so the nails won't be long enough to get caught.

this could be from lack of calcium, it is best that you take your animal to the vet so the doctors can find a diet to help it
