There are so many rules...it will be difficult. It would be best if you take some classes or find a tutor who understands the necessity of correct spelling. Unfortunately for you, at the present time spelling has become less important for the main U.S. population. Partially because of text messaging, partially because of Marketing departments who think it's cute to miss-spell words, partially because of the quickness of emails which have not been spell checked, and partially because schools do not emphasize spelling as much as they did in the past. Most younger kids don't see the importance of spelling (which makes it difficult to interact with the rest of the world who have English as their second language, which makes spelling so much more important) so we are finding upper level American managers who can't spell. The other problem is there are many words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Spell check may not find fault with a word that is spelled correctly, but is not the correct word for the application.
I had a manager who emailed a request for desserts, but spelled it as deserts. When I made a joke about sand and oases...he never realized he had miss-spelled the word. I think he STILL doesn't know the difference. Good luck, I wish I could help more.

Try going to a large bookstore and looking in the educational books in the children's section (or go on line). Look for a spelling workbook--one that will give lots of practice exercises and explain the basic spelling rules. You can memorize the rules as a place to begin, but since there are a lot of exceptions, it helps if you start to keep a list of the words that you misspell most often along with their correct spellings. Work on memorizing those words. It takes time and effort, but you will get it eventually.
In the mean time, learn to double check any word that you aren't sure of. Use the spell check feature and a dictionary. The more you look words up, the more you will remember how to spell them over time.
You may be able to find some of the spelling rules at bedfordstmartins.com.
