Depends on how much you want to spend. Personally, I'd look near a PATH station in Jersey.

Soho and Central park will be ridiculously expensive. Hotel prices tend to get inflated around Christmas time. Some of the big chains, like Marriott or Hilton, around Midtown will probably be a lot lower, but till expensive.
It would be a lot cheaper to find a hotel in New Jersey and commute to Manhattan. The Hyatt in Jersey City is one stop on the PATH train ($1.50 fare each way) to Manhattan - near Ground Zero, or also a short bus ride into Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is in Midtown. It is also one stop on the nj light rail line ($1.75 each way) to the Newport Mall, which has lots of shops and a movie theatre. This is a better place to shop than in NYC, because the sales tax is lower. There are also some other hotel chains in this area of Jersey City, including the Doubletree.
If you insist on Manhattan, I would recommend the Clarion on Park Avenue (near 23rd street). It's small but very clean and comfortable.

I would suggest looking for a hotel in/near times square , central park, or rockerfeller center. Those would be great locations for your family, in the heart of the city. If those areas are outta your budget, then look futher out of midtown area. Here are a few sites to help you. http://www.1800nyhotels.com/new_york_tourist_attractions/central-park-hotels.html, http://www.visitnyc.org/times_square_hotels.h
tml, http://www.royaltonhotel.com/ , http://www.parkcentralny.com/,
Another choice is to stay in NJ, b/c it will be cheaper. The hotel agents should be able to assist you with locating the bus schedule or train station. Easy access would be northern part of jersey--right across the river.

That is such a nice time to be in New York City. Your children will love it. (You're a nice parent!) I'd try to make reservations quickly, Manhattan fills up especially for the week between Christmas & New Years. Any NYC guidebook will have updated info as will the "NYC & Co." web site. Enjoy your stay in Manhattan!

Anything on or around Central Park will be great. All the hotels are upscale, very nice, and close to everything that you will want to see.
