Can you overwrite Windows Me with Windows 98?

You can just like the others have stated, but I would encourage you to install XP or 2000.
The file systems with ME and 98 are very problematic. Most of the crashes are related to the FAT system. The NTFS is far better and less headaches.
But if you can't or don't want to do that, you can overwrite ME with 98.
boot from the cd and format the harddrive. It's been a while since I messed with those versions, but formatting the drive eliminates the chance of having two OS folders.
I know for example installing XP over Win 2000 will put a new system folder on your pc.
The 2000 installation is kept in a c:\WINNT while the XP is c:\WINDOWS
The same thing may or may not occur with 98 and ME. Format to be safe.

Bad idea. You will have some files you are trying to put in that are older than files you already have. You will end up with a very unstable system. Windows ME will do some things that 98 won't. If you really want 98, and I presume you mean 98SE, wipe your hard drive and do a clean install.

yes. format the hard drive and put in the Windows 98 CD installer in the drive. Boot up the computer and follow the instructions. Check google for more detailed instructions.

Yes, but I would remove the Windows ME folder before installing Windows 98. Actually, I would remove it even if I was only reinstalling Windows.

You mean you want to install windows 98 and get rid of Me? if so why dont you just delete the partition and start clean installation.
