As I was walking home from a grocery store this morning, a man who was perceptibly unemployed and not so attractive approached me and asked me if I wanted to go out with him. This is not the first time this has happened, so now I am starting to wonder. These men obviously think that I have lower standards. If *I* have lower standards, than that implies that I cannot do any better....? Or am I wrong?

I knew that someone would say I am judgemental, because I know what it sounds like, and I would think so too - but if you knew me as a person, you would know that I am far from it.
I am not going to choose a best answer, because I got something out of almost all of them. I just want to say thank you for your help, and thanks for taking the time and writing more than just a line.

You know what, 95% of all men have self-esteem totally out of proportion to what they are. Complete losers are still out there hitting on the ladies and thinking we're bitches because we say "no."
It could be how you dress. Sometimes they assume women with short skirts (or whatever) "are asking for it."
It could be your weight. I know from personal experience that when I was heavier, total losers were always coming on to me. I guess they thought that "fat girls aren't as picky."
There's nothing wrong with you! Even if we're really fat, that doesn't mean tht we're going to be grateful for any man that looks our way!
But, face it, even if a guy gets turned down flat by 100 women, if the 101st says "OK" then he's ahead in the game. Some guys make it a practice to flirt with EVERY woman they meet in the hopes of finding some that flirt back.
Maybe you're just so pretty that he couldn't resist giving it a try, like that song PRETTY WOMAN. It could be a compliment.
I still have some losers hit on me just because I'm a happy person and usually have a smile on my face. I look approachable. Maybe you seem approachable, too. It's not just guys talking to me. I can be standing waiting for the light to change with 2 or 3 friends and it's ALWAYS me that the tourist asks for directions, never my friends, but I look friendly.

I think I understand your question. You need to stop wondering. This seems to happen to very attractive women. You have no control of the type of man that asks you out. Given the circumstances of this morning I wouldn't give it a second thought. Many successful men are intimidated by attractive women and don't approach them if anything else they probably have a husband or boyfriend. This however this may not be the case. Some men have nothing to lose so they say What the heck and go for it, because maybe they would rather be alone than with someone they are not attracted to. Maybe they see you as someone who cannot afford a car since you are walking home. You can look at them as lonely, or desperate, or bothersome, or flattering. I have seen beautiful women with ugly, fat, and sleazy guys and I can't figure it out, but I don't really try that hard either. Different strokes for different folks, as some say.

I get what you mean. Are you really attractive ? I find that happens to me and I think the reason is they feel they have nothing to lose and they seem to have more balls than a good looking guy. I wouldn't say you should think something is wrong with you that these men approach you. The others are just scared. At least that has been my experience.

Obviously you are so attractive that they could not let the opportunity pass them by and they drew up enough courage to ask someone out , with whom they may not otherwise have the opportunity to do so again. I would rather take it as a compliment and pay no attention to their request. But from a logical point of view, he is unemployed and not so attractive, but that doesn't mean he is not human! He might or might not be one of the most modest person you could ever come across.

Yeah i get your question.
umeployed and unattractive have nothing to do with who is asking you out, If anything it means that something is jiving with them.
I'd say probably your a person of higher quality who won't
fall for a "loser"
the two main things that people look for are looks and personality.
It's been the same thing for me, I've had loser girls chase after me, I think everybody has all types interested in them.

maybe you have a sweet welcoming face and not a bitchh face that screams gt away from me this isnt a issue about you not deserving better some guys just feel they can approach any woman and get their attention even the losers have confidence these days and why because so many women like to date them just nicely tell him you arent interested.
