You expand your lungs by breathing deeply and have your belly expand outward while you are breathing in. Then you push the air out from your diaphram so your voice projects further and sounds natural instead of sounding like you were yelling.

I had heard that all my life and had an epiphany one day.

I was speaking to my brother, who was watching TV and absorbed in it. I spoke normally in louder tones, saying his name five or six times.

At that point, irritated, I almost yelled, not quite, but opened my throat and said it forcefully enough to make it really project and get his attention.

At that moment, I suddenly *knew* what they had been talking about in choir all along. The air is really pushed out across you larynx using the diaphragm as the force, rather than modulating it with your throat muscles.

Usually people speak from their lungs and sing from their diaphragms.

Take a normal deep breath, you will notice your chest rises.
Now breath and put all the air into your stomach, you will see it makes you look fatter (that is breathing from you diaphragm)

When you talk it makes your voice sound richer.
When you sing, it enables you to have better breath control.

technically, you don't really speak from your diaphragm, but you can learn to breathe from your diaphragm which can help you to project your voice more dramatically and with more power and control. (it is a technique learned and used by opera singers) You can learn this by taking voice lessons from a vocal coach.

you stand straight, take a deep breath and allow your ribs to expand outward. When you speak, you will know you are speaking from your diaphram if your voice sounds full and not nasal.

push from your belly and try to make your voice go to the furthest corners of the room-not yelling in your throat, but pushing from right under your ribs
