They are the ones who arrested Jesus and they are the ones who blindfolded him and said "who hit you". They also known as "guards" and "soldiers" and they were sent by the pharisees to arrest Jesus. Who are they? Romans? Jews?

Good question - I haven't studied this but my best guess is that they were Roman because Romans were the only ones with power at that time to arrest and prosecute people. Otherwise the Jewish people that disagreed with Christ would have done away with Him long before that point in history. And it does seem odd at first glance to think about Romans guarding the temple but I'm sure that since so much action took place in or near the temple and since the Jewish leaders met there - then that would be a great place for Roman guards to be placed to keep an eye on everything for Rome. So best guess - Roman guards stationed at the temple with the power to arrest others.

there are both types of Guards in the gospel stories... Roman and Temple

the temple guards were on special assignment and were to guard just the temple. When Jesus overturned the tables in the temple, they would have been on duty. They were the ones who said "never did a man speak like this" insead of arrecting Him

the romans had many soldiers in Jerusalem and the gospels say that the WHOLE praetorian guards were beating on Jesus
In this regards The Passion when it showed only 4 guards beating up Jesus was actually understating the situation

the tomb was guarded by roman guards, you can tell because the religious leaders had to assure them they would be protected if news reached the governer they had a missing body on their hands. The penalty usually being dying in a fire started first by lighting your own cloths if what you guarded was lost.

one thing for sure , in Matthew the angel came down from heaven and rolled away the stone and SAT ON IT... and scared the guards away... tuogh as they might be, either set of guards are no match for an angel

a second thing for sure... the Romans were ticked... after 31ad something big made them make grave robbin a capital offense.... he is not here!! he is risen!!

and a last thing... those guards had a lot of stories to talk about... the ear cut off by Peter that Jesus healed... the sun going dark when Jesus died... the scary angel.. the empty tomb...
musta made for an interesting time for sure

Who put Jesus onto the cross, who put the robe on Jesus and the crown of thorns? it was the romans under Pilate. It is safe to say that most of the guards, or all were Roman guards.

The men who guarded the temple were Jews, probably Levites by clan. It was the Priestly line of Aaron that actually served in the Holy of Holies (as priests). Aaron's family came from the tribe of Levi. This tribe in particular was chosen to serve in all things regarding the Tabernacle of God, and later the Temple.
