This used to be a very confusing situation for myself also. But I prayed and asked God to show me how to test or to try the spirits. And when you want to know for certain whether or not a spirit is of God or not, it is not really as hard as it may seem to be. For God gave us all power and all authority over every evil spirit. (Luke 10:18-19) All that you must do, is to say, "I rebuke every spirit that is not of God," or "If you are not of God Almighty Jehovah, I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ. And I command you to get gone in Jesus' name." The evil spirits have no choice but to leave you when you do such. I have to do the same every day of my life. For Satan is continually attempting to mislead and deceive every child of God that He possibly can. And every day, I claim the blood of Jesus over myself, my family, my marriage, my property, and over every part of my life. May God bless you in your walk with Him.

Isa. 8:20 gives us A way, IF they [spirits] speak not according to the law and the testamony [ testament same word] if they speak not according to this Word there is NO light in them, The Word of God the Bible was given by God's holy Spirit, and HE NEVER WILL speak something that is out of context with scripture, read the Bible "after" you pray and verses around what you read to make sure your not taking it out of context. "This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God; Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus, is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world." - I John 4:2-3

Well, just remember what Jesus said: "You shall know them by their fruits." Therefore, you can discern spirits by knowing what they actually say, do, or give rise to.
But how to do this? Well, the Bible's pretty clear. To determine whether or not a spirit is of God, you look to see whether or not that spirit manifests the fruits of the Spirit. The Book of Galatians helps with this. The following is from Galatians 5:22--23.

22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Does the spirit which gives you directions or presents itself encourage these characteristics? If the spirit has love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and equanimity, then it is a spirit from God. A spirit which encourages the virtues of humanity or convinces you and/or others to develop and preserve these characteristics is a good spirit. Any spirit which tells you to do something selfless or to develop good characteristics is from God.
Galatians 5 also tells us what are undesirable fruits that a spirit may manifest.

19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Emulations and variance in the above scripture refer to jealousy (attempting to emulate what others do) and worshipping evil powers, respectively. Notice how these, in sharp contrast to the fruits of the spirit, are pernicious, evil character traits that destroy humans. These character traits are those naturally manifested by humanity, as we are born in sin. As Christians, our goal is to separate ourselves from and destroy the flesh. Therefore, if a spirit encourages you to develop any of these vices, then you can draw the conclusion that that spirit is not of God, but of Satan.
When you encounter a spirit, try it. If it encourages love, kindness, meekness, and virtuous character traits, then it is of the Spirit. If it encourages the opposite or encourages you to do actions that result in evil, then it is of Satan.

Isa 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Isa 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:

2 Tim 2:25 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The gauge of test is in1John 4:2-6 which says "How will you know whom God inspires?.
Any spirit acknowledging that Jesus Christ has taken our flesh speaks in the name of God. But any spirit which does not recognize Jesus is not from God, it is the spirit of the antichrist. You have heard of his coming and even now he is in the world. You, my dear children are of God and you have already overcome these people, because the one who is in you is more powerful than he who is in the world.
They are of the world and the world inspires them and those of the world listen to them.
We are of God and those who know God listen to us, but those who are not of God ignore us.
This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error as well.

Luke 4:41 (New International Version)
Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.

Matthew 8:29"What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"

Satan can paint a very lovely picture at first, But remember he will never admit JESUS is the son of GOD.
He can say he is a prophet, a healer, a teacher so on and so forth, But he will never admit he is the SON of GOD and there for LORD of all! GOD Bless you for seeking truth

you ask and declare the name of Jesus - if the person you are talking to is not speaking in line with what scripture tells you - then they are not of God
if the spirit you are confronting is not of God, it will flee at the name of Jesus

Challenge them with the identity of Jesus Christ. A demon WILL NOT call Him "Lord" or "master", because it is in total rebellion against God.
