Could be due to a number of different things, such as:
* Need more RAM (memory)
* Need to run Disk Cleanup
* Need to defrag hard drive
* Virus activity
* Memory obtrusive programs running
* Too many TSR's running (background processes)
* Slow CPU, or BIOS settings need to changed
* If hard drive has less than 20% available space left
Check Task Manager, to see how many processes are running.
For XP, 30-35 is standard. For Windows 2000, 30 is standard.
Anything more, may indicate virus activity, or a program that is a memory hog; such as, some anti-virus prgrams have several modules that run when fully installed. Each one of these counts as a process.
Check hard drive space available, by right-clicking on the drive Local Disk (C:), and select 'Properties.'

Good answers except first one which I would ignore.
I suspect that you could do with more RAM. If you run Windows XP it uses a lot of Ram.
If this is a NEW problem, then do virus and spyware scans as suggested by others.
Get rid of junk - CCleaner is a free download and does a great job and
DEFRAGMENT regularly

The question is, do you have antivirus software? How about antispyware software? Viruses an spyware will slow your computer down something ferocious.

Here is some things you should do on a regular basis to clean up and
Speed up your computer. In Internet Explorer, go to “Tools”, Internet Options, and click on “Delete Files”. These are temporary files that just take up space on your computer.
Download and run “Ad-aware” and “Spybot” . These are Anti-spyware programs. Spyware will slow down your computer. See links below.

first, how fast is your cpu and how much ram do you have? Lack of ram is one of the biggest problems, but assuming that you have plenty, run spyware, adware and anitvirus programs often and be sure thier updated. Second, defrag your harddrive often. Third, get rid of any programs that you really dont use. You can use programs like system mechanic to help.

You might need more memory. Mine was so slow and now that I doubled the memory it's much better. Close any programs down in your task bar, that you're not using that opens up some more memory.
