I took a moment to read some of the other answers you already got, but how about a way to avoid them, for good? I suffered with canker sores, all of my childhood, and no one seemed to be able to give me an answer as to why! Then, I met up with an older doctor in New Jersey, who told me to stay away from all sources of citric acid, just for a month, and see what happens. He said, "No 7-Up, no lemonade, no orange juice, and no grapefruit, or any other foods high in citric acid". Low and behold, it was the first time in my 13 years that I went a whole month without a canker sore! He also told me that in order to get the necessary vitamin C that I needed, (ascorbic acid) I should just take it in pill form. Ascorbic acid does not appear to cause the problem, but citric acid most certainly does. What REALLY "gets my goat" is how many licensed, practicing physicians today, are totally unaware of the cause! They have plenty of "remedies" but few have the knowledge of how to finally get rid of them, once and for all! I hope this works as well for you, as it did for me. I've told some others over the years about this, and in each case, they've had the same rate of success as myself. Good luck!

Take a high potency multivitamin-mineral pill daily
Dissolve 1-2 DGL tablets in your mouth 3-4 times a day
Use Colgate's Peroxyl mouth rinse as directed.
Good luck!

Take in some pepto bismol (pink anti-diarrhea stuff). Hold in your mouth for 30 seconds or so. Then spit out or swallow. The gentle coating is soothing and will make the sore dissapear faster.

i usually let mine runs its course. those things that the other person suggest is for cold soars. canker soars is not a form of herpes. many people get them because of their diet, or even hormones. i get them and have gotten them since i was a teen. they wont kill you, they sting a little but since they are in your mouth, you cant put abreva or alcohol there.
