As old fashioned as it sounds, take your phone book and in the business area, just being looking up and calling therapists. That way you can find out rate per hour and other specifics first hand. Depending upon your needs, the person on the other end of the phone can tell you if they offer family sessions, one-on-one, or other services if they aren't listed in the phone book's ad. Then, by talking with the therapist a little, you may be able to determine if they sound like a nice, genuine person or not.

Good Luck.

Definetly look in the phone book and call around. You might have to go through several therapists until you find the right fit for you. You PCP could definetly recommend some...but I would try the phone book first.

On a side note, therapy can always help....if you want it to.

when you look in the phone book, look at the credentials after their name:
LPC (licensed professional counselor): trained as a counselor in all areas.
LCSW (licensed clinical social worker): trained in clinical social work.
LMFT (licensed marriage and famiy therapist): trained as a counselor in all areas with specialized training in couples and family.

Etc.

Call a therapist (pick one in the phone book) and ask them to recommend one. They would know the best in your area better then anyone else.

Ask your family doctor to recommend someone. Usually they personally know someone, or ask friends or family members for a recommendation, chances are one or two or them have gone to see one in a time of need. Good luck to you.

go to the apa website. describe your condition. there will be referrals.

also, question why you feel that a therapist is 'out for the money'. therapist study a very long time. it's doubtful they did that for the emolument of wealth.

To tell u the truth , u are your best therapist.
Think positive, read positive, healing books, find hobbies that are positive, and pray and read the bible,
U will see the difference, exercise and eat right.
