The check engine light may have come on for something simple like the gas cap not all the way on. But there may be something more serious wrong with your engine. You should hook your car up to a diagnostic reader and it will tell you why the light came on. You can also use the reader to turn the light off. Most auto parts stores, checker, Napa, auto-zone, will let you use one for free. Sometimes you might have to put a deposit down if you want to take it home and use it. But once you bring the reader back they will give you a full refund. Otherwise if you go to a mechanic they will charge you $75 - $125 just to hook your car up to the diagnostic tool. Good luck

How long did you disconnect the battery for? It's probably something stupid like a sensor in the gas tank or the gas cap lid. My check engine light has been on for five or six years, and the last time I checked....my engine was still there. The only bummer is...in NYS we have to have our cars inspected every year, and the check engine light can't be on. So I disconnect the battery for a day, and then I'm good to go.

This works on most dodge vehicles. Go to advance or auto zone, and buy the chiltons book. Look for diagnostic codes. You can find out several things that could be wrong with you vehicle, by using your ignition. for example, it will say something like put the key in the ignition and turn the key foward to aux (not all the way on). then off then on then off then on then off then on again and leave it on, the check engine light will start to blink, I think it will be like 5 times. then it will blink and you count the blinks and there will be a pause between numbers, and you write the code down and look it up in the book. kinda like a self diagnostic, but it dont read everything. Check your oxygen sensor also

To reset the check engine light, disconnect the negative battery cable, and with it disconnected turn the ignition key to start for a few seconds. Reconnect the cable and drive it for a while. If it comes back on. go to and Autozone parts store if there is one in your area and have them put on a diagnostic computer to read the fault.
Before I would pay more than $100 for a shop to check it out, you can buy ODBC computers at Wal-Mart for about that.

The smartest thing is to take it to a tech with the diagnostic system for your car. The light is on for a reason. Until you find the reason, you could be doing some serious damage. Maintenance is always cheaper than repairs.
