IN THE WILD THEY ARE GREEN AND YELLOW. ONLY IN CAPTIVITY DO YOU FIND THE MANY BRIGHT COLORS. YOU CAN GET THEN WITH OR WITHOUT THE BLACK STRIPES. RARELY DO YOU FIND THEM WITH MY THAN TWO COLORS PLUS THE BLACK STRIPES, BUT THEY ARE OUT THERE. MALES AND FEMALES CAN BE TOLD BY THE COLOR OF THE CERE ABOVE THE BEAK. THE FEMALE'S CERE WILL CHANGE COLOR UPON MATURITY TO PURPLE OR BLUE.
THEY ARE VERY SOCIAL FLOCK ANIMALS. THEY LIKE TO CHATTER THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THEY HAVE MORNING AND EVENING CALL, THEY DO CONTACT CALLS IF ONE IS TAKEN OUT OF CAGE. THEY CAN LEARN SPEECH. THEY CAN BE TAMED. THEY ARE VERY FUN TO WATCH AS THEY BOB THEIR HEADS AND DO TRICKS SUCH AS HANGING UPSIDE DOWN OF TOP OF CAGE OR GIVE THEN A PIE PAN TO TAKE A BATH IN.

You do know that you would be reading a year from now if you tried to read everything that was written about parakeets. You should do a search on each of the search sites like yahoo, google, ask. Buy a few books.
Or just ask what it is you need to know.

Parakeets are sweet little birds, but they can be very delicate. Keep them out of a direct draft, and yes, they can break a wing or even a neck by letting them fly into a ceiing. Your best bet is to train it to your finger and keep its wings clipped so he cant fly. Also make sure you handle it daily so it will bond to you and become socialized. They eat seed, but also need zupreem or some other kind of fruit suppliment unless you are giving it fresh fruits and veggies , which is best. They are good birds, but they need a good person to keep them healthy and happy. Good luck with your new baby.

Adult males have blue ceres (the colored part around their nostrils) and adult females have brown ceres. Baby budgies of both male and female have bluish/pink ceres. I would also recommend you do a search on the web or read some good parakeet books to get all the info you're looking for.

Oh Boy....
Okayyy. First of all you need to get a DNA test in order to determine the sex. Your parakeets, or "Budgerigars" as they are more correctly known as are "monomorphic", meaning you can't tell by looking at them. "Zoogen" is a company that does DNA testing on birds.
You are going to be reading for a long time as much has been written about them. They are quite popular Companion Parrots and have been for a long time.
First of all, try these links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar
http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/
http://home.clara.net/np21/norma1.htm
http://exoticpets.about.com/cs/budgerigars/a/budgies.htm
http://www.tuxford.dabsol.co.uk/
http://ezinearticles.com/?Basic-Care-of-Budgerigars&id=252423
http://exoticpets.about.com/od/budgies/index.htm
This should get you started.
Budgies are delighful little guys and very smart. they can learn to talk very well, do tricks and they are a ton of fun.
Be sure to read about their diet which, as all parrot diets, should include fresh vegetables, fruit, grains and cereals, as well as a good avian supplement such "Pro-Vital" vitamins.
They need their water changed often. and you need to get as large a cage as you can afford.
They are small and delicate so you need to be careful handling them.
Use newspaper for a cage liner as corn cob can be ingested and may imact their crop-not good.
I suggest wing trimming for people who are unfamiliar with keeping companion parrots. These birds are quite light and one open window or door might provide a way out into the world he has no experience with. You don't want to lose him.
If you haven't gotten your budgie yet, may I suggest adopting one. There are many websites of Parrot Rescue Organizations that have hundreds of birds available for adoption for a nominal fee.
Phoenix Landing is one such non-profit organization that does fabulous work:

Please adopt if you can as so many birds would simply love to have a good home.
If I can be of any more assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.
Good Luck.
