Okay, let me walk you through this. Use fingernail clippers and get yourself some "Quik Stop". Its a styptic sold for birds at pet stores. This is in case you screw up. Trim just the tips of the nails. Don't use those perches made to keep nails short, they are very irritating to their feet. They hold on with their feet, not their nails! Just hold your bird lightly and let them wrap their feet around your finger. Clip away!

I also recommend using cement or sandy perches. Do not cover the perches with sandpaper covers...they are too rough and will hurt their feet. The sandy perches have a very fine grit to them, like an emery board. The rest of the perches should be various sizes of wood or rope. Clip the very tip of the nail...you can usually see the pink blood supply running through the nail. Just don't cut it. Have quick stop powder on hand just in case. You might want your local bird vet to show you how the first time.

Since you have experience clipping, go right ahead. Just be careful to not clip the vein which can be easily seen as a different color as the rest of the toe nail. Because birds tend to squirm when they are being clipped, have blood stopper handy. If you are unsure of how to do this have someone with experience do it for you while you watch so you can do it yourself when or if the need arises again.

You can buy a cement perch it will file their nails down if you can not find one a calcium perch or put one perch in with the sand papery looking slip covers but do not put them on all you budgies perches as it can cause their feet to be rubbed raw. if you are going to clip their claws which is hard to do carefully, you will notice the blood vain like a quick in a dogs claw do not cut down to that or they could bleed awful bad if you can not see the blood vain do not attemt it. take it to a vet they are trained to trim the claws and beaks. Good luck. Those calcium perches are also good for their beaks as well.

Simple, get these sand-paper like covers for the perches in the cage. They are like fine sandpaper and just simply hopping on them keeps the nails trim. It's safe and you don't have to worry 'bout clipping a vein.

Their nails can bleed fairly easily, so be careful. It is best to use a drummel to file them down gradually rather than just cutting them.
