Any time a book is adapted for the screen (or radio) plot has to be cut to get it into the time limit allowed. With most movies, they suffer for the deletions. In fact the only one I know that was improved was The Lord of the Rings.
War of the Worlds was set in England, not New Jersey, in the book. The hero spent more time hiding than fighting and he killed a priest to keep their hiding place from being found. No heroine. Hero was married, but didn't get back to his wife until the end of the book.

Lots of things are different. First, a movie can rarely put all of the things that are in a book on the screen, unless the movie is based on an extremely short book. Second, movie people always seem to think that they can do the story better than the original author. Finally, even with special effects, there are things that either can't be shown or won't work on screen. Also, there are things that are made more graphic than the original text would have them.
No one can tell you all about this. I would suggest you first read the book, and then watch the movie. You'll be able to see for yourself how different they are. My advice is to not try to base a book report on a movie you've seen, unless you've also read the book.

Yes, both American versions are different than the book. There is an older English version that follows the book almost to the letter.
If H.G. Wells were alive today, their wouldn't have been so much "artistic license".

The book does not have Tom Cruise, so it's much better.
Also, it was written in 1998. The (recent) movie was set in modern times so naturally there were hack attempts to modernize the story.
It's public domain now, so you can download it free from Project Gutenberg here http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/36 (text) or here http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/8976 (audio, in multiple files)
