You should really only do it when he is a puppy, just weened. As the others have stated, this is a cosmetic procedure and really serves no purpose, but if you want to do it make sure of a few things. Chose reputation, not price in a vet. Discuss with your vet about anesthetic. Your puppy should be completely asleep as to not feel any part of the procedure. Insist on a pain patch, these usually run an extra $25, but are worth it. Also, inquire about pain medication for during the healing period. The patch will be effective for 5-7 days, but depending on how old the dog already is you will want additional pain meds if he is older. If your vet will not accept these requirments, do not use them.

Unless you and your Dane are going into the show circuit in the States, I would say never crop your dogs ears. It is already illegal in other countries because of the pain and it has no benefit for any dog. Let your dog be what he is, a Great Dane al natural.

This is a cosmetic proceedure with no other purpose. The scaring if done improperly can really mess up their ears and it permanent. I'd let it go natural rather then have your dog go through the pain and trauma of a cosmetic surgery, plus if it turns out bad your stuck with it, even worse your Dane is stuck with it.

Don't get them cropped at all. It's extremely cruel, and should be banned completely (except for medical reasons, of course). Would you like to have your ears half chopped off for fashion?

Why do you need to do that at all? I have a pit who still has his ears & tail. My friends around the block had a dane with ears & tail. God made it perfect. Leave it alone!

Please do not do that to your dog. It is painful and serves no purpose. Some of the times it won't work anyway. I believe if you are going to put your pet through something so unnecessary and painful then you should be willing to have something done to you that you don't need and will hurt for quite a long while.

To be facetious I would say wait until the day after he dies - at any other time it would be sheer barbarism.
Thank God this practice is against the law in England.
