I recently brought home a new dog. I already have 3 dogs. Two of the current dogs get along fine with the new dog but the third (my alpha) is looking for fights with the new dog. The new one already lays down and backs off whenever the alpha comes around but my alpha continues to look for fights. My question is roughly how long does it take before my alpha stops looking for fights? I've owned multiple dogs before but they all got along with no real issues before. This time, its a little different. So, how long does it take before my alpha stops caring about the new dog's prescense??

What you have is a pack and it may take more time or it may never happen that they all get along. I would suggest seperating them.

That depends on a few things.
If the new dog and the alpha dog are the same sex it may never change. Same sex aggression is very common in some breeds and really bad in several breeds. Neutering does not help with same sex aggression. Sometimes it will but most times not.
Depending on the breed of the alpha dog (doberman) for one will not tolerate another male in it's home. You do not keep two male dobermans together. Most will fight and some will actually kill the other dog.
The alpha is tryiing to defend his home and territory and he may not ever accept the new dog.
Three is a hard number of dogs. Things are much esier with two one male and one female. They will work out the pack order and be fine but with three sometime two will gang up on one dog and it is just harder to balance the home.

but what you need is something that will tell you how to fix your problem. So, click the link to the dog psychology center below.
this is not an advertisement, You really do need help and Cesar Millan is just the person to help you.
Most dog trainers are not trained in dog psychology (although a number have been training so long they really do understand them)
AT the dog psychology center Cesar trains people to understand the needs of a dog or pack.
Also: you may want to get a copy of his book "Cesars Way" for reference. and catch an episode of his tv show on the National Geographic Channel on Mondays and Fridays.

Good Luck

Part of your problem comes from having a dog that believes he is the alpha dog. You need to assert yourself into the pack as the alpha. As this is how the dogs see you, as part of their pack. Once you are perceived as being the alpha dog, the dog fights will stop. My suggestion would be that you hire a professional trainer to help you obtain this position.

Has your alpha been neutered? If not, it could keep happening for a while.
