Might be silly...maybe everyone knows but me? What I'm wondering is...when a male dog gets neutered...I know he can no longer get a female dog pregnant...BUT...does he no longer get physically aroused (excuse the language but..."*****"?) when a female dog is in heat? Does he become disinterested, or is he still interested but he cant actually make puppies? Thanks to all serious answers!

He was neutered a week and a half ago...he's about 10 months. Then we found out he had a rare birth defect with his 'peter'...8 days after his neutering he had to have an another operation on his privates. The problem:our female dog is in heat! If the male gets too "excited" he could break his stitches and blood vessles...and after two surgeries in 8 days, we dont want another. Anyway, today he was peeing blood and it was because he was 'excited' (even though we were keeping the two dogs in separate rooms)...he's staying at the vet till Monday, and I'm thinking about boarding him another two weeks...I know all about the female 'heat' stuff, and just wondering really when its SAFE to take our boy home. :( I'm a poor student and am doing what I can to avoid more vet bills. After two more weeks being boarded at the vet it'll be day 19 of our female's cycle so it should be safe. Should we do 2 weeks? more? less? Opinions or educated opinions are great. Thanks to all whove answered

Depends on how old the dog is when he is neutered.
most male dogs are neutered at 6 months of age.
sometimes that is too late to affect the way they react to a female.

at 6 months of age a male dog begins puberty and is quite capable of being aroused because of the rush of hormones released by his testicles throughout his body
if you have him neutered before that happens, then he will not have the same reaction to a female later in life.

he wont become gay but will just not be interested. it doesnt mean that he cant become aroused, he just wont think about it.
he will also be prone to putting on too much weight so a regular exercise program may be in order to help him stay healthy

i noticed that many people here are saying that he cannot get an erection after being neutered. WRONG. a dogs equipment is not like a humans. Humans get one by the engorgement of blood into cavities in the penis. A dog has an actual bone inside their bodies that is moved into the penis during arousal to make it erect.
Hence the human saying "getting a bone*r"

I have a 9 yr old male chihuahua that was neutered 3 years ago and he still does the deed sometiomes. Of course no puppies come from it. I had a min pin a few years ago that was neutered and the next day, he bred one of my dogs. True story I swear. The dog had puppies 62 days later. The sperm can live in their bodies for up to 2 weeks according to my vet.

The dog cannot get a bone* but if the dog was neutered after being allowed to breed at least once he will still show signs of being interested in female dogs in heat. I own an animal shelter and many of our older males that get neutered after coming to live with us are still interested, even years after being neutered. But if they are neutered as puppies, before maturity then they should show no signs of being interested in females.

After a male is neutered he can still "do the deed" but no puppies will result.
Most neutered males will not tei up with a female but if they were neutered late in life or after they had been bred they still can.
After being neutered most are not looking for it all the time but if the opportunity is presented some will still take it.

He wont be stimulated sexually since neutering also removers the sorce of the sex hormones. You may find he still does get aroused, but it has nothing to do with mating. Some dogs both males and female will mount another dog (male or female) and it has nothing to do with sex, it is a domince issue, the dog on top is telling the other dog he's the boss. Hope that answers your question.

Some dogs will become aroused still after castration and others it will not even phase them.

Usually its the older dogs, who were castrated late and probably bred before and they kinda remember what to do when they are around a female in heat. Nothing can happen though.

Where as a young male castrated before his hormones had gotten the best of him and never bred before, will probably not mount to breed, maybe for asserting dominance.

When a dog is neutered their testicles are removed, so they can't really get aroused, however it takes @ a month to get all the testosterone out of it's system and the hormones to level off.If he was neutered before he reached sexual maturity then there won't be an issue, however if he's older and/or has been used for breeding he may show some interest.

Neutered males can still get aroused, whether in the presence of a female in heat or sometimes just by themselves.

I had a dog who could and did "enjoy the pleasure of his own company," for lack of a better term.

The way it is referred to is desexed, as in no gender or sexless.

A dog is disinterested. The older the dog when neutered the more "male" behavior he will retain.

if they are fixed when they're pups no because it removes all those horny dog hormones. now if they are older when they get fixed and come around a ***** in heat they do still want to hump because he relates her scent to it feeling good but not through means of humping hormones.
