For the past three years we were given 16 minutes to run a mile, this year our teacher is making us run it in 15, and lowering the time by half a minute each time. Once he made us do it in 10.5 minutes!! I can finish in about 12.5-13 and I thought that was good. THIS IS TOO MUCH FOR AN UNATHLETIC 18 YR OLD!

I never understood the need to time a mile-run. It's pushing kids too hard. For example: I have asthma and have always hated running. I'll speed walk, but since the running sets off my asthma I can't run.

My PE teacher originally made me run until I had an attack. From then on I was able to speed walk the mile.

I would explain to your teacher the unrealistic goals. Explain that you would like to aim for 12 miles, not 10. Ten minutes for you would be like asking a size 12 to fit into a size 8.

You don't need to go to the doctor or lose weight just to make the time. Go to the doctor to BE HEALTHIER, not to run faster. You can always build up to it, but some bodies just aren't meant for running the mile under 10 minutes. I can walk a mile in 20 minutes, and I think that's good.

In high school, I would've said, YES, it's too much! But I discovered the secret in college (because i was forced to) and now i actually enjoy running (GASP! In high school I would've rather died!)

Here it is: GO SLOW. a mile in 10.5 minutes is less than 6 miles an hour. That's a slow, easy jog. Do NOT try and run till your lungs hurt and walk and run, etc. etc. Just kick back and force yourself to jog nice and slowwwwwly. If you can keep that up for 10 minutes, you've done it. You may or may not be able to do it on the first shot depending how out of shape you are, but with a couple practices you shouldn't have any trouble.

Running is an endurance sport. You work your way up to your progresses.

If 10.5 minutes is too fast for you (and that is a fast mile, very fast), run on your own 3 days a week for 30 minutes. Go SLOW. Your goal is to finish without walking or stopping. Don't pay attention to your distance or speed.

You will be surprised at how quickly and easy you do that 10.5 minute mile!

When I first started running, it would take me longer to run the same distance that I would walk.

How unathletic are you? I mean, I only do traditional exercize in gym during the school year and I run the mile in about 9.5-10 minutes. But everyone is different and if you cant hadle it, you should push yourself too hard. what will the teacher do? They cant force anything. Just keep whatever pace you are comfortable with. If they are threatening you with a bad grade, thats unfair and you should fight it. Not everyone is physically fit. also, who ever put in that ad for "hoodia" is a nutcase. Disregard it. Godd luck running.

Not really if you practiced 2 or 3 times a week you could take off a minute every few times until you reach your goal. Try practicing on a tread mill and watch your speed. I have to run between 6.5 and 7.0 mph to make 10 min. Don't forget to do a warm up mile or two so you don't get tired to fast.

I know in the military I had to run a mile and a half in 12 minutes. I'm not in the best of shape but I was able to do it, tho I did feel like I was running for my life.

Ugh...I *really* think gym should be an elective. I almost didn't graduate because of it. I have asthma, and I am very unathletic. My highschool had the 90minute classes and it was TERRIBLE. I hope that your gym teacher isn't grading you by your time cause that's just not right. :-/ If it really is that bad, talk to your doctor and he might be able to get you out of it. (Either getting you out of having to run, or possibly even getting you out of gym all together) Thank god my doctor was nice and that's how I finally got out. I didn't have to take gym for several quarters (mainly during the winter) and I didn't have to take it at all my senior year.
Good luck!

That is doing pretty good...........in my running days i could do a mile in like 6 or 7 minutes.............but yeah, i was in very good shape at the time...you are only 18 and if you are not use to running then you need to tell your coach to let up!!!!!!!!!!!!! This could hurt you very seriously!!!!!!!!!!!!!
