I see a lot of religious folks say things like "if there was no god then Hitler would have got away with it" or "if there was no god then how would there be any reward for being a good person?" or "if there was no god then what would be the purpose of life?".
Well, why do you think life owes us justice or rewards or anything else for that matter? To say that life would simply be unfair without these things, and that therefore a god must exist to assuage our indignation at that fact, is one of the worst possible reasons to believe that a god exists. It's the fallacy of Argument from Adverse Consequences.
I say we should just accept reality - that the unthinking universe neither knows nor cares of our existence - and make the best of it.
What do you think?

setfreejn836: Of course there are no gods in reality. I think everyone knows that, if they're honest.

I would go along with that, and add that since there is neither justice nor mercy in the universe, then it behooves us to use these attributes to make our own lives, and the lives of those around us, as good as possible for as long as possible -- because we're not gonna get another chance.

first of all hitler did get away with all of his atrocities. he never stood trial. if a person does good only to receive a reward, then what good have they done. each person must find their own meaning in life. the only person who owes me anything is myself. people do not wish to face reality because life is hard. it is easier to blame everything on a single evil being then to admit that we are responsible for all of mans ills. and how can a single evil exist without a single good.

hey, i'm with you.
whoever said there HAS to be a "meaning" to life? say it is what it is and call it a day. there's no reason why it can't be that simple.
and for the religious folks who need the threat of eternal damnation or the promise of a reward to keep them on the right track; i think you missed the message.

I can't deny my Creator just because it fits someone else's form of reality. The Lord is real to me. I believe in Him because I felt His power and presence. I don't think "life" owes me or anyone else anything. I owe the Lord my love, praise, and worship. I show my love by treating others with love and compassion.
