If your old griller was dirty......that's what you are tasting.
Tips for Buying Fresh Whole Fish
Full, clear, bright eyes.
Bright red or pink, clean gills.
Fresh, mild odor.
Shiny, brightly colored skin with tightly adhering scales.
Firm flesh, elastic to the touch, clinging tightly to the bones.
Proper display: on ice tables or in refrigerated units at 1-2 degrees Celsius (34-36 degrees Fahrenheit).
Tips for Buying Fresh Fillets and Steaks
Glossy and freshly-cut appearance, firm texture.
No signs of browning or drying around cut edges.
No discoloration.
Proper display: in perforated plastic containers or metal trays to drain liquid; placed in closed refrigerated units at 1-2 degrees Celsius (34-36 degrees Fahrenheit) or surrounded by crushed ice.
Tips for Buying Frozen Fish
Look for solidly frozen products.
If surface is visible through clear plastic packaging, make sure there are no dried cottony patches or discolored spots on the surface of the fish, and there are no ice crystals or frost inside the wrapping.
When buying frozen whole fish, choose fish with an ice coating or glaze, which prevents discoloration and drying.
When buying frozen brand-name packages or store-wrapped packages, look for undamaged sealed wrapping, with little or no empty space inside the wrapping.

When it jumps out of the pan, walks over to the refrigerator, and slaps the butter silly.
In all seriousness, fish should never have a fishy odor before cooking. And if it has a strange flavor afterwards, pitch it. It may have been contaminated by something on your old grill that didn't quite get cleaned up properly. Or it could simply have been bad to begin with.
As the victims of the recent E-coli outbreak here in the US could tell you, food poisoning ain't fun.

Sometimes fish can acquire a strange flavor from the food they ate, and they still may be safe to eat ... but if it tastes bad, why would you want to eat it anyway?
Did you switch between farmed salmon to wild salmon? Wild salmon is healthier for you, but maybe there is a little taste difference. Farmed salmon is fed food with dye in it to give it the pink color that people expect.

how was the salmon when you touched it? Was it slimy at all? if it was, yes it's bad. It's shouldn't feel slimy at all, but should feel like it was washed with water. Plus how did it smell. Fresh fish is orderless. And another way to tell if it's old, is how it smells when cooked. Strong salmon smell from a mile around? Plus when you press the flesh with your finger tip, was it firm? It should be, the skin should NOT come apart easily when raw. And the color of the flesh too, shouldn't look mushy, and should have a bright orange color.

Its not really the flavor, if its a different type of Salmon, Silver, King, Pink , Sockeye? they all taste different, when you buy a salmon check the gills to see if they are pink, if so its old, fillets are harder to define, but the redder the color the better for all except pink.

Any fish should smell like a fresh ocean breeze, not a fishtank. If it smells fishy or is an odd color, it's bad. To be on the safe side, if you think it tastes funny, you probably shouldn't eat it. Get some pizza instead. Haha.

Salmon should have a healthy pink color, and solid texture. No off odors, either. Even if it meets these criteria, if it has a strange flavor, I would toss it.
