You should be asking this question in your school guidance office, not on Yahoo where you are going to get some wacky answers. These people obviously do not know what they are talking about, Most scholarships are based on financial need, not scholastic record. And a very large number of students get them, not just the class valedictorian.
Most schools will automatically consider every applicant for admission as an applicant for financial aid. So, you need to do the FAFSA form.
The sooner you take care of this, the better.
If you want to get into the right school, have all your ducks in a row! Get organized now and start working on your school applications so that when the schools check you out, you look good!

they give them to you because of your academic excellence when your GPA is very high or for if you are in a sports team and you are really good or earn things like MVP or Player of the year

They are granted on academic excellence , so if you're not super smart, it is not likely you will get one of any significance, like one for 4 years.
