My husband and I had trouble finding a name for our son ten years ago. We both had names picked out that the other didn't care for. So I had a brilliant idea. My husband's name is David John. So I suggested to him that we take his name and flip it around to come up with a name for our son. So our son's name is Johnathan David. I thought I was a pretty damm good idea. Good luck. sam

I have a list of what not to do: don't give a boy a gender-neutral name (like Dana or Chris, Kelly or Taylor). Don't choose from last year's top names, or your son will be one of seven Jacobs in his first-grade class and will end up going by his middle name or being saddled with a stupid nickname. And don't take a normal name and spell it funny, or give some totally weird or made-up name. It sucks to go into a store and see a rack of pens or stickers with names printed on them and never see your own name.

How about after an important male in your life -- like a father or a grandfather?

We're naming our son after my husband's best friend and his grandfather.

The name will be special if it's got a special meaning in your heart.
