Yes, I think goldens are very protective of their owners. I joke about my Molly...that she would just lick someone to death(lol) but in reality, I really think she would protect me if she thought I was in danger. Once a strange dog came into our garage and startled the %*! out of me. Molly went balistic! I saw a side of her that I never thought I would see...very protective...and that strange dog has never been back! If I were walking in the woods at night, I would feel very safe with my golden. Hope you find the answer you're looking for!

I have a 2 year old Golden and he would not hurt a flea... he would take off with the first person who loved on him. When we are horsing around with the kids our Golden gets a little excited (wanting to play) but as far as defense I don't think he would do much. We have had German Shepherd mixes in the past and they are extremely defensive of us. Now my dad has a 7 yr. old Golden and he has seen a "protective side" to him. Dad was in the car with his dog and someone approached the car, surprising them both, and the dog barked and growled. The dog had never done anything like that before.

I have a Golden Retriever and he can't be protective because he loves people so much! If people are around, he just wants to run to them for pets. He barks at strange noises but I bet if a burgler came into the house, he would just be getting a lot of licks from my dog.

Golden Retrievers are excellent family oriented dogs that remain playful and loyal until they die.You did not mention what gender your dog was.But it usually by rule that femle dogs are protective of family, while the male is usually protective of property. Most times another person will not bother you while you are out walking your dog.Reason being, is that they too are being cautious.Large dogs are intimidating enough to ward off would-be attackers. Most dogs can sense danger and are usually very protective of their masters especially if you are well liked by your pet.Spend alot of quality time with your pet and you shpuld not have to worry. But I would also suggest walking your dog in areas you are comfortable with as well as in well lit areas.Your dog is your 'best friend' Will you be theirs?

No, if your dog loves you and takes you as his master, he'll die for you. Fight back, anything. Even friendly dogs like retrievers know when things are going bad, and will defend you. They'll probably even make you walk faster if they sense any danger, before you can even think about a possible threat. They're more intelligent than some people.

We have a golden that loves everyone but I know if anyone were to try and hurt my wife or myself our dog would die trying to protect us. There is no greater bond in the world than that between a dog and the loving person or persons that own it.

The only way your Retriever would help you is if he licked your attacker so much he drowned him! Those dogs just love people.
