never had any of the automatic scoop free litter boxes but I used to work at PetSmart and both brands were one of our biggest returns. Most of our customers told me that they had to go back to the regular litterbox because they got clogged up and stopped working.

My best cataholic friend has 6 littermaids, ranging from the original to a new (last week, I think) model. She loves them. The big deal is to remember not to put too much litter in - the machine has to be able to scoop through it. I've heard the scoopfree is good, too, though.

I tried the automatic litter box and my cat liked it fine, but it was not easy to clean. They make it seem like you just have to empty the receptical where the waste goes. However, cat urine gets on the side and in the cracks where the bottom meets the top, etc. Therefore, I went back to the regular litter box.

I have tried both, and they are more work than just scooping. There is an automatic box called the "litter robot" - you can find it from google. I have had one for 6 months now. The cats use it, it cleans out the litter very thoroughly and is low maintenance. It is expensive, but well built and uses much less litter than a regular box, so it may eventually pay for itself.

I suppose this will sound like a bad review...Sorry.
I have tried them in the past, and I do not like them, and to take the chance of one malfunctioning (it is a machine) is not worth it to me. They are difficult to clean and takes more time.
I have two litter boxes in my home, and a schedule, first thing in the morning, and last thing at night I clean them...during the day if it is messy, cats do not like to use a litter box that is messy.
I agree with the other that said to invest your money into a nice water fountain, my cat loves them.
Good Luck with your decision.

they cost alot of money. they make alot of noise when you are trying to sleep. cats love going in and out so it keeps making noise. I had two automatic litter boxes and both broke in several months. after spending alot of money I just went back to the plain litter box. it is easier. some cats don't even like it and will not use it.

Save your money and buy a good cat water fountain instead. This will encourage them to drink more water, and prevent kidney problems later in life.
Try FreshStep litter. It works great.

It sounds great, but is is such a pain to clean! There is not enough litter in it so the cat pee sticks to the bottom of the pan. And cleaning that rake...UGH!!!

I thought about buying one but my daughter talked me out of it. She reminded me that not all kitty poop is hard. If the machine scrapes up the poop before it hardens (it's still soft) then it gets caught in the machine and is a pain to clean it out.

My neighbors have one. Their cat doesn't mind it, but they told us that one of their friend's cat was scared of the noise it made and wouldn't use it at all.
