The place was named Fatima because a Christian prince married a daughter of the muslim faith and her name was Fatima.

Mary is not divine and she never told anyone so she is just the the handmaid of the Lord, all she has asked for is that we do penance, because God is so offended by our sins, she wants to lead us to her son Jesus.

I'm a Christian, and no, it has no significance for me.

I don't believe Mary would appear anywhere here on earth for any reason - I believe Satan is the great deceiver and that any "sighting" of Mary or any other saint could be a manifestation of satan.... but more likely a figmant of someone's imagination.

Not only is Fatima the most widely documented event of its' kind in modern human history, it was witnessed by many who were atheists and unbelievers, including many secular newspaper reporters of the time.

The actual newspaper accounts are still available for all to see.

The story is absolutely amazing, and until a couple of years ago, one of the three seers/witnesses was still alive.

Wikipedia is a particularly poor source for Fatima information, because it includes opinions of those who have no direct knowledge of the event, and are merely faithless scoffers.

Not only was Fatima a daughter of Mohammed ... Muslims have always held the Blessed Virgin in high regard ... a much higher regard than do most Protestant Christians.

This very tantalizing connection may be the key to some future event, which is still unknown to us.

Finally, those who witnessed the fall of the Soviet Union couldn't possibly have missed the role that the late Pope John Paul II played in bringing down that evil empire.

John Paul II suffered an attempted assassination on the date of the Fatima apparitions, creditted the Blessed Virgin with his survival, and was particularly devoted to the Blessed Virgin throughout his papacy.

Seven years after he consecrated Russia to Christ, as the Blessed Virgin Mary requested at Fatima, the Soviet Union was no more.

Three children claimed to see Mary, the Mother of Jesus, at Fatima in Portugal. It is true that thousands witnessed the "miracle of the sun" at the end of the appearances.
It is a place where many Catholics, other Christians and Muslims visit. Remember the name, Fatima, is the name of the daughter of Mohammed.

yes all though Muslims do not believe in catholic customs. But the Fatima apparition has a larger meaning than most think. She appeared to 3 children 2 of which are grown adults now. she gave then a message...A grim message. this message included warnings and events that are currently taking place in the world it this message goes on to predict the Armageddon. look in too it for and do some more research " letter of the virgin of Fatima" and draw you're own conclusion.

The Mother of God?? When I read scripture, I do not find any reference to the mother of God. I find that Mary was the Mother of Jesus Christ, but it was the man, not the Spirit. Mary was a woman who was used of God. She is not a goddess. She needed the Holy Ghost like everyone else did. She even had to make an offering for sin at the temple. She has no special place in this world. It is the catholic church that has elevated her to a position that she does not have.

We can conclude from this "eye witness" account that it was delusional:

"Before the astonished eyes of the crowd, whose aspect was biblical as they stood bare-headed, eagerly searching the sky, the sun trembled, made sudden incredible movements outside all cosmic laws-the sun 'danced' according to the typical expression of the people."

The Sun is visible to everyone and if it had done any such thing, it would have been a global phenomena, far more widely reported than exclusively from some peasant village in Portugal.

The biggest example of mass hallucination ever. Sounds like a case of the "Emperor's New Clothes" - "only the wise will see this thread". I think you might want to do a little more digging on the history of this because I don't think there were any atheists or non-believers in the crowd - only people that WANTED to believe.

It especially does with Catholics. You would think that it would be more talked about but, like everything for the sake of Ecumenism (sp?) Mary's intercession in human history is being discounted. What a mistake. If I were Jesus I would be very upset that my Mother was being treated so rudely. She is only trying to lead more people to her son.

Two of the three predictions resulted in World Wars. The 3rd one is taking place now. The Vatican is keeping secrets - maybe Benedict may take a bullet for his comments earlier this month.

No, this is just Catholic belief, God does not permit such things. Don't forget that Satan keeps transforming himself into an angel of light to mislead.
